Comparison on my system between LP and CD tracks (Thank you Peter)

- No stereo (see ?); = On the LP is Stereo(listening off axis)
- Strange highs (see ?)= Nothing strange here.
- No bass AT ALL (see ?)= There is bass on the LP
- No filling of the room anywhere while this track is famous for it. = Here I can’t compete with Peters amazing sounding room

This in brief. But additionally in more detail :
No flagiolettes to be heard (always a property of the better system). = ??????
CD shows two (dubbed) voices - LP only one. = Correct, very easy to hear on the CD, on the LP most of the times  difficult to hear, but there are two dubbed voice, good to hear in the middle and end of the song.
Dead sound. Bad, poor, nothing. = ????
Watch the very last stroke on the guitar and how LP shows "a sound" while CD shows all the strings from a guitar.. = identical on both tracks

The CD produces more details, and the SPL of the LP is 6dB lower,
In absolute terms the CD track sounds better.

flagiolettes

Can't find any translation/explanation in the net.

Is it  "castanets" ?

Chris Jones - No Sanctuary Here

There are different releases of this song in Spotify/Amazon. One with  "castanets" and the other (LP) without.

For anyone who's interested, here's a needle drop from an 'audiophile LP'. I'd love to know what you think of the sound quality.

Guys,

Just a clarification.

This is the "Ref" Data USB cable on tour. Not the V4 as I originally mentioned.

Now the lack of coherence remained. This was clearly demonstrated by ‘Don’t give up’ from Peter Gabriel. Perfectly separated instruments pinned in the air but they seemed not to care about each other.

Hi Coen,

You are writing amazing reviews!!  good (Peter too)

Strange things are happening within Audio.

First, the YFS cable ist fast, VERY fast!!!

Coherence: During a test with the nickel plated BNC/RCA adapters I had the same impressions, but with the LINDY (gold plated) adapter coherence is back again! Strange, very strange, but that's the case on my system.

A good sample/test is the track 6 of the following CD.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belvedere-Beady-Belle/dp/B0012K5PX4/ref=sr_1_8?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1416428654&sr=1-8&keywords=beady+belle

Let's see/read whats going on during this cable test??!!

Hi Peter,

I'm using the YFS Reference USB cable, and so we are comparing apples with oranges. I can't compare with the other "testers".

Joachim

EDIT: May I have a photo of your by-pack USB cable that I can dig it out. Thanx

a „normal“ cable

Which is not the one we provided with your NOS1 ?
Can you still find that ?

Regards,
Peter

Hi,

no, I can't remember.
The beginning of listening with the NOS1 USB version was with a normal USB cable, then came a cable from Entreq which created a better SQ and then the YFS.

The YFS **Reference** has an extra/additional shielding and this influences the SQ. (keyword: every cable is an antenna)

Hi,
interesting.

I’m using the data only YFS **Reference** cable in my system  since over a year and changed to a „normal“ cable  back today.

For the comparision I played  the  CD from Stanley Clarke

 http://www.amazon.com/Jazz-Garden-Stanley-Clarke/dp/B001VFM0QU/ref=sr_1_10?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1416399145&sr=1-10&keywords=stanley+clarke

first two tracks, where we can hear lots of an acoustic bass and  cymbals.

First impression with the 5V powered cable, a little bit more ambience, the sound of the cymbals is more room filling, and the acoustic bass got more body, but not more bass overall.

The orientation/location  of the instruments  decreases in the soundstage, bass strings sounds less precise, and the cymbals don‘t sound right anymore. With the YFS **Reference** cable I hear at first the click on the cymbals, and then immediately the sound of the „shell“ follows, which I don’t hear with the „normal“ cable.

Conclusion for me: The YFS **Reference** cable is more accurate and I see no reason to go back to a 5V USB cable. But we know, every system sounds different, and we have to evaluate what cable creates  the best sound in our system.

Joachim

Edit: I'm using the YFS Reference USB cable, maybe this creates the difference.

I didn't know where to put this so thought I'd start a new topic...

But even this may be 'fixed' when we undertake some major building work on the house, including extending the room, as we hope to do in 18 months time or so. But for now I'm over the moon.

Mani.

Hi Mani,

in the end .......... suceeded.

I see that you are willing to spend "some" money for a good SQ.

In Germany the company
http://www.hmselektronik.de/index.htm
has some good ideas.
The SOTA is a unit  "Energia Definitiva High End Power Supply" for appr. € 7500,00, but I can't find any reference in English, except:

http://www.hifi-phono-house.com/product_info.php?language=en&products_id=8953&XTCsid=820b71982a252ad909edba1ecae474ca

They have some smaller units (RC 4/3) with a similar concept starting with < € 2700,00 too.

341  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Building a PC for NOS1a on: November 13, 2014, 02:08:15 am
Hi,

based on my experience with the laptop Michaels route with an external PS is the most promising.

It will be interesting to see what Coen is digging out too.

I’m sure, exciting/thrilling times are ahead of us.

At first I will play with Peters "Blaxius", which didn't arrive until today.

Another item:

The BNC/RCA adapter from Lindy has the best performance, a nice analogue sound with a "wall of sound" stage. I tried a chromated 50Ohm adapter and the SQ got harsh and the sound stage fell apart.

Please see:
http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=3026.msg32635#msg32635

Joachim

So ? I understand that you don't like the wall of sound etc., but only after finding the WikiPedia description ?
If this is correct, what did you intend to say here then ?

Peter

Heeey Peter,

the sound what I hear is perfect, but not the definition I wrote.

When you accept that the definition of "wall of sound" is identical to "concert hall sound" and "ambience" then we are speaking the same language

When I have to judge the SQ as per the "wall of sound" definition acc. to WikiPedia, then I have to listen to one of this recordings, and I have not one in mind. The sound of the samples at WikiPedia do not meet my preferences/taste, but this were different times.

Hey Joachim,

I'm getting more and more under the impression that you referred to the "wall of sound" in a negative sense. Is this correct ?
(I ask this because I though you found it positive and now I am not sure)

Regards,
Peter

Hi Peter,

The "Wall of Sound" term describes a recording technique from Phil Spector I was not aware of, and I have no record in mind with this procedure.

The SQ with a  "concert hall sound" = "ambience"  is preferred.

Joachim
344  Ultimate Audio Playback / Cables (Community induced) / Re: Cables with BNC Connectors/Adapters Are Generating A Superoir SQ on: November 12, 2014, 02:33:14 pm
Hi Peter,

the link for a “wall of sound“ is not a good sample.

Let’s explain it  in other words. In a concert hall the sound of all instruments are arriving our ears in a „mixture“ . The „ sound waves“ of each instrument and the reflextions of the walls are interacting with each other and the „final result“ is what you hear at the listening place.

The more accurate definition is, I think „ambience“  =  from Stereophile: ambience (pronounced "ambee-ints") The aurally perceived impression of an acoustical space, such as the performing hall in which a recording was made.

Beg your pardon for my misinterpretation/confusion.

Hi Peter,

you invested a hell of time in your  explanation, great writing.

Make it short, because my room is not as  big as yours and my seagull can’t fly ……… .

The definition for „Wall of Sound“ I used see:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wall_of_Sound. (The intent was to create a dense aesthetic that came across well on AM radio and jukeboxes popular in the era.)

With the nickel plated adapter or some other cables there is „nothing“ (no air) between the  instruments, it seems, that these instruments are recorded in separate chambers, not connected with each other. There is no cohesion in the soundstage as you hear it in concert halls. So, there is nothing special what I hear, and we know, every room sounds different. (see the differences between Pauls and Manis SQ's. Paul is in heaven and Mani is struggleing to get the same result)
