481  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: A superoir SQ of the NOS1 with 8x AP only! on: May 15, 2014, 10:02:35 pm

- New Arc Prediction Filter version (oops);

- NOS1a version.

Peter

Hi Peter,
good to hear that the we can trust our ears, and that your new AP produces identical/similar results.

Our main concern/question is now, is there a time schedule for the shipping of our NOS1’s to you.

Kind regards

Joachim

Yes Joachim, and with the notice that that topic wasn't about any DAC sweet spots as such;
That topic emerged about 4 weeks before your NOS1 got stuck in the snow somewhere around Frankfurt. And 20 others somewhere else. swoon

Peter

The topic was not my main reference Peter,
it was Brians comment on 2011-01-14 with the -3dB.

I started with the NOS1 (volume at ~ -24dB) connected to the power amp (no pre amp).
During 2011 fuses blew at the PA 2 times and I implemented the preamp. Volume was set to 0,0dB and my impression was a better SQ. After some tests with the volume settings the final set was -3dB (on my system with the preamp).

At present the NOS1 (volume at ~ -30dB) is connected directly to a different PA, which has a fast DC Offset protection (so, no preamp), and I'm quite satisfied with the amazing SQ at 8x PA.

Hi Mani,

I think I understand Happy And there the dreaded "But ?" intervenes Happy
Of course, the better I manage to isolate from the vibrations, the better the results. I could even put my device in another room where the vibrations will be attenuated, but vibrations are from everywhere, even if they don't come directly from the speakers ?

Hi,

vibrations are not the main problem, resonances of the internal components or tonearm etc. are causing the degration of SQ.
The optimum is to locate all the gear in the next room, but who has ............ . So, everything else is a compromise.
Are we all hunting for the "absolute sound" and overreacting?

Hi Mani,

that's the point. With another DAC (Weiss) I had the impression that XXH sounds at -3dB superior than at - 24dB.

As far as I remember CoenP wrote the same a couple of month (>12) ago.

Joachim

That wasn't me (afaicr).

I wonder though if your preference for having the NOS1 at -3dB hasn't got more to do with the 1704s working more in their 'sweet spot' than anything else.
Mani.

EDIT: What I wrote sounds not logical. My impression was that the XXH SQ at -3dB was better than with -24dB with the preamp and/or the WEISS DAC.

.....,  but it's obvious that even at this level, preamps are not totally transparent.

Mani.

I get the best SQ with a Dartzeel preamp and XXH volume control at -3dB. This combination is superior to the direct connection from the NOS1 to the power amp.

I thought these steaming sites were offering only low resolution feeds. Is this not right? If so why upsample? If they offer high resolution files/feeds that would be interesting

Have a Look to www.wimp.com. They have 16/44,1 Flac files for EURO,s 20 per month in some countries.

using an ultra high-powered PC feeding a PC-immune NOS1.

Hi,
that is an item where I'm sitting in the dark (as always).
Peter and/or same Forum members are underclocking the CPU down to 470MHz (under performing). The CPU i7 3930K costs more than € 500,00 and then ......... .

Thanx for an explanation.

Joachim

Was that something for an answer ?
Regards,
Peter

Thanx Peter,

strategy understood.

494  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: A superoir SQ of the NOS1 with 8x AP only! on: April 26, 2014, 04:16:59 pm
Hi,

made a very short test run (due to item 2) with Swicht#5 up and changes within XXH/driver panel necessary.

My impressions:

1 - with the same volume setting the SPL is much louder.
2 - the acoustic bass (of the a.m. Brian Bromberg CD) is much bigger than his natural size.
3 - bass is fuzzy at very deep frequencies.
4 -  the soundstage got lost by a certain margin and the positions of the instruments are not accurate. (see item 2)

So, back to my previuos settings and everything fell into place again.

My wife is out of home and the "seagull" flew higher than before.  Happy The cymbals and bells were hit in different depths of the room. Amazing to listen.

On my computer system with the settings noted in "profile" this seems my best choice of the AP.

Unlike Joachim, though, I'd say that 16x sounds a bit too smooth compared to 8x

Brian, I don't think Joachim said that ? Anyway it is clear what you think.

Regards,
Peter

Hi Peter,

Brians OS is W7 and mine W8.

At present the SQ wit 8xAP is quite pleasing and I'm comparing "apples".

When switching #5 at the DAC XXH setting remains at 16xAP or reduce it to 8xAP too? = Edit = Stupid question!!!
