496  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: A superoir SQ of the NOS1 with 8x AP only! on: April 26, 2014, 08:58:13 am
Ron Carter and his “Golden Striker Trio” was in Helsinki a couple of weeks ago. It was an impressive performance and what I was wondering about was, that his acoustic bass was “singing” (with the typical reverberations).

A test CD straight from the beginning is.

http://www.amazon.com/Wood-Brian-Bromberg/dp/B000FQJPBO/ref=sr_1_5?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1398493659&sr=1-5&keywords=brian+bromberg

The sound characteristic of the acoustic bass I heard live is not reproducible at my home, until I switch to 8xAP and the bass is “singing” now. (Brians remark “ ….. 16xAP  have slightly less body and presence than 8x” hits the nail ……….. .)

497  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / A superoir SQ of the NOS1 with 8x AP only! on: April 24, 2014, 10:02:29 pm
Hi,

I made several  tests  in conjunction with 24bit/96KHz HD and 16bit/44,1KHz recordings.

My impression is that the SQ of 16bit/44,1KHz recordings is smoother with a finer note/less overall harshness  (of the cymbals)  and a bass/kick drum  with more resonances/reverberations. The soundstage has more width.

Peter, please listen to the CD, track 2 again and you hear now the clicks of the sticks on the cymbals very clear.

Here is an article in the Stereophile

see "System Tweaks".

At some units the "hot wire" is marked at the power inlet socket.

PS: Tomorrow I am going .....

Hi Peter,
this video, listened to with acceptable near field monitors connected to the PC,  has a sound resolution of the drum kit (Tom Toms, Cymbals, Snares) which I can’t find on any CD. You can hear the stick hitting the cymbals prior to the sound coming  and the post-pulse oscillation of the Tom Toms, just what you criticised.

This CD from Dave Weckl sounds not bad.

http://www.amazon.com/Dave-Weckl-Band-Live-Plugged/dp/B0000C9JDR/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1396981776&sr=1-1&keywords=dave+weckl

My impression is that good recorded Live CD’s are presenting a better/natural sound than most of the studio recordings.

Hi Peter,
thanx for your comment.

Some days ago I heard a live concert via television, and the astonishing thing was, that I heard at first a KICK DRUM. This was the major instrument.
In live concerts the drums are the loud-voiced instruments, but during the record mixing ............. !

I found a CD with pronounced percussions from Christian Prommer

http://www.amazon.com/Drum-Lesson-Christian-Prommers-Drumlesson/dp/B002V72K1W/ref=sr_1_4?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1396779268&sr=1-4&keywords=christian+prommer

and there is an "Acoustic Drum Solo" on the Stereophile Test CD2.

The impact of the kick drum is on both CD's not very impressive. My neighbor is a drummer and I listened a couple of times to him ............. .

It seems that we have to organize a "rally" to the Netherlands.

Hi,

is there any CD available to listen to a "live" kick drum?

I do have some "drummer CD's" in my collection, but ..... ?

Any „suspension“ of our choice favours the SQ, and Peters approach is very, very special and the result seems to be positive.

Peter can be very lucky that the vibrations/resonances did not damage his housing foundations, especially the walls to the “water front”. (this is a joke, but .... .)
I never experienced such “deep tone” resonances with my feet before. Unbelievable!!

(elephants are communicating ……….; and the French Army made some tests with 1 to 5Hz frequencies with disastrous results some years ago)

Gosh with the multitude of changes I think everyone needs to slow down a little.

I have yet to try W8 and still happy with W7. This sound is still well ahead of any opposition I've heard.

But its got to the point that the latest W7 settings are way beyond my computer anyway.

What with 12 cores and beyond its getting into Star Wars land.

We all recognise that the evolution must go forward but we need time to listen to settings and one would hope MUSIC.

Don't let the technology over ride the Music.

Hi,
My computer is in simple words, an office PC with a 4core Intel proc. as per sig.
I made several tests with Peters “seagull” track and was listening especially to the 3D image and the highs with the VERTU CD (Stanley Clarke & Lenny White).
From my experience on my system the RAM disc has no positive effect on the SQ under W7 & W8, so all is running on the spinning disk.

Under W8 I got the following results.
A)   All on the spinning disk – best 3Dimage and nice highs.
B)   Playback drive on a RAM disk – 3Dimage was smaller, harsh highs,
C)   Playback and XXH on a RAM disk -  smaller 3Dimage than under B), harsh highs.

I am glad you can see/confirm that "well below 20KHz". But I don't see it or don't know where to look. sorry

Another graph from a CD and an ITunes track (256kbps). The WAV of the iTunes record was created with the internal device.
It is here very well to see, that the frequency was cut reduced to well below 20KHz.

Peters remark about the "Virus program" is ............ .

Hello,

the tracks are bought from iTunes and they claim to use AAC-LC.
I was very astonished that the newer recordings at iTunes are nearly identical in their graphs (WAV) with the CD rippings  since the beginning of 2013.

There should be a difference, but it seems .......... .

I don't know how that conversion can fail and I also don't know how your rip can have failed

Regards,
Peter

I checked the rip again it is identical with AccurateRip.
