76  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: OS preference for Music Server on: February 15, 2016, 06:39:30 pm
With some of the new energy efficient chips, they only need 4.5 watts.

Hi,
what is this for a CPU?

My intention is to use this one plus a LPSU with the RAM OS:

Lastly, though I've gotten RDC to work here, the impact on SQ has always been substantially negative.

Hi Brian,

that's true, this RDC connection (with the 2nd PC via Ethernet) degenerates the SQ heavily, and since that finding the RDC is a NoGo for me and I have some training lessons to keep my weight  Happy

Brian, I understand now.

Possibly you are not familiar with the phenomenon "airy" or maybe better "with air". This is how all is going to float with "see through" and more I too can not describe. But it looks like something very different from what you describe.

Thanks,
Peter

HI,

airy

Pertaining to treble which sounds light, delicate, open, and seemingly unrestricted in upper extension. A quality of reproducing systems having very smooth and very extended HF response.

On my system 1.04 favours the SQ compared to 1.03.

Joachim

Joachim: In what way does 1.04 favours over 1.03?

Peter: Is there a technical reason for that?

Stanley

Hi Stanley,

see here. Michael wrote about it first, and I hear the same improvement Happy

Hi,

Just tried with 8x instead of 16x.

Hi ALain,

a lot of us are now with the USB driver 1.04, but I don't know if that works with the NOS1.

On my system 1.04 favours the SQ compared to 1.03.

This Intona is GREAT! And great value for money too, at less than EUR 300 (for the Industrial). I have absolutely no affiliation with Intona (or Phasure, or any manufacturer for that matter), but I'd say that you need to beg, borrow or steal EUR 300 to buy one of these babies.

HTH.

Mani.

Hi Mani,

nice to read.

Question: the price is excl. VAT?

Hi Robert,

my room is not treated, but my listening SPL is well below 70dB(A) most of the time.
I'm using the "custom filter" setting 352800/High.
Made a short comparision between 16xAP/8xAp using Peter's "Seagull" record again, and in my opinion there is more ambience with 8xAP.

86  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: My first NOS1a / XXHE experience..... on: December 31, 2015, 02:10:42 am

"Laptop + XXHE + W10 = bad"

"Laptop + XXHE + W10 = bad" –  Noo, it works (dependent of the processor!) if SQ has priority!

1)   I’m listening to XXH with 8xAP since 2 years only. Reason for me: more ambience & timbre

2)   The laptop processor is an i5-2410M with 3161 CPU marks, the i7-3930K has 12077 CPU marks. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-3930K+%40+3.20GHz

3)   XXH is installed on a RAM disc with both SSD’s.

4)   Peter’s recommendation is to cut down the CPU speed (i7-3930K) to appr. 0,5MHz per the BIOS, which is not possible on my laptop. To lower the CPU speed I’m using the “energy options”, selected 60%= 1,36 MHz & shutting down the GUI after 2min.

5)   Using various settings in X-Tweaks (XXH 2.03 + WIN10-10586) and the processor runs now in the “Turbo mode” with 2,86 MHz (normal 2,3MHz), the same result with  omitting X-Tweaks and MinOS. (every computer reacts/works different)

6)   On another SSD with W10-10240  + XXH2.02, the system  is running with a “third party MinOS program”. Processor speed remains at the selected 60%= 1,36 MHz in the “energy options”.

7)   Made some tests with two settings of the ”network services” and stranded with all ”network and LAN services”  shut down.                                                                                                                                                                  So, no remote + LAN, WiFi etc. and the SQ improved immense, and that not by a small margin. (more details, deeper bass; all CD’s are new for me again)

8 )   Another change occurred was the Volume setting (of XXH):  with ”network services”  on = 31, and without = 37.

Here, the best SQ on my system, ever.

Wish you all a “Happy New Year” and good health for 2016 and beyond.

Hi Peter,

A nice second Christmas day to you all.

Question:
Did you test an “off the shelf” USB cable between the PC and Intona?

On CA (#22) suspicions are that in THIS connection the quality of the USB cable has less influence to the SQ than downstream to the DAC.

Hi,

Ambience
(The aurally perceived impression of an acoustical space, such as the performing hall in which a recording was made)

comes prior to accuracy for me.

Joachim
90  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: Audioquest Jitterbug USB Filter on: November 30, 2015, 03:56:27 pm
Why oh Why

Do I, personally, always have difficulties in understanding the real message from you, Joachim. Look :

Quote
Very, very dark background, amazing bass, very clean sound, less ambience.

The only message as such I can derive from this, is that less ambience is a good thing.

Is that what you want to say ?
Please be clear ...

Peter

Hi Peter,

I think the criterions mentioned stands for themselves.

If you like a very accurate system the Jitterbug is something for you, if you prefer more ambience, it is not.

With the Jitterbug you are moving from row 25 to row 1 or 2.
