526  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Fireface400 alternatives? on: November 13, 2007, 03:41:41 pm
Hi Peter,

I have the impression that a small part of the functionality of the Fireface is used in the complete chain to create a analog signal. "RME's Fireface 800 is the world's most powerful FireWire audio interface ever. Up to 56 channels record/playback......Eight balanced line inputs and outputs ......." Even the Fireface 400 has impressive specs. 36 channel....

It's connected via the PC firewire interface and delivers a SPDIF signal to the DAC. Are there cheaper alternatives to create a quality SPDIF signal? Which properties are important for a good selection?

e.g. http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/FireWire/AudioFire2/specs.php

Johan

I have test it again. Disabled the usage of virtual memory and did a reboot of the system. See the screenshots. I don't understand the reason but you can still see the usage of virtual memory (wisselbestand=...)

Hi Russ,

If you are implying that you had 'memory errors' when you disabled virtual memory and that all was fine after you re-enabled it, that would only indicate that you had insufficient physical RAM memory available for your systems needs.

Indeed, after the re-enabling of the virtual memory I've not seen any memory errors in a week. For me it solved a problem.

.......I think I've got it. It appears to be update 938979 that was causing the problems. The weird thing is it sounded like my drive was starting from a dead stop every time. It's like it was shutting my drive down after every read/write or something Oh well, it's working fine now, and I don't have to hear that stupid drive spinning up all of the time

Above is a quote from the link you send! After I uninstall update 938979 the problems are solved. Thanks, you are great! clapping

I think the disabling of Virtual RAM was the tweak that fixed it

On a regulare base I had memory errors during XX usage. At a certain moment I was realizing that I had disabled the Virtual ram. Tweak from the past : http://imageevent.com/cics/v03theartofbuildingcomputertrnsp;jsessionid=t9hii13rc1.zebra_s

After enabling the Virtual RAM the memory problems are gone! So be aware of memory errors!

If you're using a usb-dac, then you should connect your external hdd via firewire.  If you're using a firewire dac, then connect your external hdd via usb.

I am using the USB DAC via .....USB and all the HDD's via internal SATA (room for four)

Hi Peter,

HDD power down afaik cannot be controlled over an USB connection (for me one of the reasons not to want such a connection).

I have the Samsung drive internally connected! There start all the problems with the spinning sound of the harddisk. I can hear it from a distance of 5 m! Almost every track! The relais are not the main problem.

Is it possible to introduce a new user settings:

"Loading all tracks in one time" ;
"loading track by track".

Is it an possibility?

USB2 ==> DDDAC1543 Wrong ! But I guess you knew that.

534  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Harddisk noise on: November 11, 2007, 05:36:30 pm
Hi Peter,

All the time I am using an external SATA harddisk (Samsung SpinPoint HD501LJ via a USB2 connection). During music playback I have noticed that the music in not allways capless. So I have decided to build the HD in mine PC. Then the big surprise : very often when XX is loading a track I can hear the very noisy starting sound of clicks and starting HD rotation and after some seconds the track is in memory. Then again no capless playback! Another moment I did not hear any sound of Harddisk access and the next track is playing.Then capless! After some Internet search on the Samsung HD501LJ I found that the Samsung had a Power Save mode. That means that, when there are no commands on the HD this feature automatically switches on power saving mode and cuts down on electricity through the sata cable. So I think that thats the explanation of the starting sound. In Standby mode there is no disk rotation. Very quiet!

Is it possible to introduce a new user settings:
  • "Loading all tracks in one time" ;
  • "loading track by track".

Some cd's I have are more than 55 minutes long, so its possible... yes...?

Today I challenged my DDDAC.

Which version of the DDDAC1543 do you use? How many TDA1543 chips did you use in your DDDAC configuration?

Select the buttons <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Del>
Select  option Taskmanagement,  tab "Performance"

I have a dutch  version of Vista, so the translation could be not 100% ok

Problem with ticks and noise with DDDAC and Q1 solved with this version.

I am using the DDDAC1543 and for me the lowest Q1 = 20 in version 0.9m-1. Lower values give cracks in the sound!

Do you use the MK2 version of the DDDAC1543?

Hi Peter,

I really don't see the problem ...

Normaly when you need a feed there is a special RSS button on a side so you can copy the feed in de feedreader. On your side it is enough to be on the side and the open the Feedreader and select the menu option FILE => NEW => FEED. In the feedreader you get automatic "http://www.phasure.com/index.php?action=.xml;type=rss;limit=20" And the the job is done. It works Great! Sorry for the trouble.
