350 MB? That can't work well with upsampling... Maybe with DAP it could work, but certainly not for QAP.  I encourage you to try some very short track, check its file size and set the same SFS. Then compare to your 350MB setting.
227  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Split file size and volume on: September 29, 2010, 06:19:46 am
The track is 109 MB and I played it with 109, 50 and 25MB SFS. I don't know if that's the optimum, since I can't listen to analog source and compare, but for me it sounds pretty damn good. It would be nice if more people contributed - played around with various values and came here to post their findings. If we find the 'golden' rule then I guess you could implement it to XXHE next to manual SFS setting, as it is right now.

I've just had a session with Stan Getz - The Girl From Ipanema (24/96). The track played upsampled (double) sounds really bad with the SFS at 50. The voice and instruments are very unnatural and the bass is somehow missing. The one thing that in my opinion seems better is high, although I don't think it is meant to be so clear in that recording (reconrded in 1963). Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, that the optimal SFS maybe doesn't 100% equal the track's size, but I'm sure it is quite close and each time I play a small track (file size), the small SFS value sounds best, and the same formula applies for large tracks.

Yeah, a hypothesis which can be very easy verified and for me it's true. Try playing very short tracks, which for 16/44 would have track size of around 15-20MB and compare the SFS of that 15 or 20MB to your 'Goldilocks' values'.

What happened to file size related values? Happy

Thanks, I wasn't aware that it applies to W7 as well. I'll give it a try Happy

I guess it could by due to IRQ sharing... Peter, do you know how to enforce physical IRQ to device in Win7? It looks that my sound card shares its IRQ with some other device(s), because it has a number of 20, which is, as far as I know, virtual IRQ.

Nick, thanks for posting the photos. Unfortunately I got rid of my Transit card, instead I use PCI sound card - Cantatis Overture. I've been thinking about psu mod, but I'm not sure if it'd be cost-effective.

I would also want to know, why my system can produce awful sound and after reboot there is nice, almost analog sound. Right now, that is the biggest mystery to me and I wish I knew what affects this... I suspect it is related to drivers. Do you face similar problems with your computer based audio?
235  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: OS latency on: September 21, 2010, 07:13:55 pm
Old topic, but I finally saw an occasional dpc reading of 1us today. My average dpc readings are around 2 to 2.5us after the system settles. I don't know if dpc directly tests the audio data flows of XX but I agree with comments about general sound quality improvements as the dpc's reported latency improves. Aggressiveness has reduced and naturalness of sound presentation has become markedly better, particularly as the last few micro seconds have come out of the dpc readings.

The system is a dedicated Audio build with everything cut that I can think of or have read about. Windows Explorer has also been killed which is how I normally play music.

Nick.

Nice result! Could you specify what modifications have you done to Vista? Your hardware isn't top notch, so I'm pretty surprised to see that your're getting 1us...

Best regards,
Marcin

Peter, we couldn't wait to get the new version of XXHE Happy

What is your power scheme setting? Set it to performance.

It doesn't have anything to do with your hardware (IMHO). I'd put the blame on your system settings (I assume that you reinstalled your OS). Try to disable virtual memory and set processor scheduling to background services. I'd also reinstall sound card drivers as well as review XXHE settings.

Greets,
Marcin

Will the cabinet be the same as for the prototype? (shape)

I'm guessing RJ45...
