301  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / 9z-2 DAP dropouts on: June 29, 2010, 07:08:50 pm
Hi Peter,

I noticed that double arc prediction upsamling of hi-rez material (24/96 -> 32/192) causes small dropouts every minute or so while more cpu-consuming (is it?) quad arc prediction of hi-rez tracks (24/48 -> 32/192) plays flawless. I'd appreciate your comments on that

Yes, it's like I'd start the player myself (double click XXHighEnd.exe).

Another log, this time easier to figure things out - first track, first minute. Playback stops, XXHE goes back to Attended. This happens regardless of buffer size and sample rate used. Sometimes I can play whole album, but in most cases I can't get through it. Very annoying.

OK, but how could it be different? :D I unpacked the 09-z2 archive to an empty directory.

Yep, XXHighEnd-09-z2, I can replace Engine3 to double check.

Only one track, Handel - Furore - DiDonato track 1 or 2. Don't know exactly. Also I don't know which log is useful for you.

There you go.
308  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: SQ differences in priorities, buffer sizes and split sizes - breakthrough on: June 25, 2010, 07:58:57 pm
I played around with different firmwares and drivers from few vendors and here are the results of my battles:

* drivers affect SQ and it's not a small impact

* there is no 'gold' rule for best buffer size (regarding SQ), core appointment schemes etc. For example; ESI firmware and drivers sounded the best with lowest buffer size (48 samples) and scheme 3, but with 2 CPU cores activated! (Roy, I perfectly understand your disappointment...)  Although low latency playback worked great with ESI software it didn't sound 'right' for me - to analytical/technical/clinical (pick whatever you want). Eventhough everything seemed to be there, great, punchy bass, lots of details, but I missed the flow of Cantatis/Via drivers. In other words, I couldn't find the setting that would not 'hurt' my ears with ESI soft. All and all I got back to Cantatis software (older version based on VIA 5.20 drivers) which sound the best for me and my girlfriend, who is now sleeping like a child and not complaining about loud music Happy

Same thing with me! No errors though.

Roy, you're the best!

THANKS  Good job !
311  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Tip to use QAP with lower latency on: June 25, 2010, 12:41:27 am
Peter, I'm afraid that I won't be able to tell you why I wasn't able to play QAP before, but you know what? I decided on a 'hardcore' solution, that is flashing my sound card with Prodigy 7.1 hifi firmware and use its drivers. Who said  sth about problems with QAP?  whistle
Now I'm able to play QAP with 48 samples and I don't have to start native hi-rez material first. But life can't be easy and, as usual, I get rid of one problem, http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=983.msg11895#msg11895
312  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Juli@ owners - heads up! on: June 25, 2010, 12:21:06 am
I've just flashed my Cantatis Overture sound card to Audiotrak Prodigy 7.1 hifi and it's working! Native ASIO drivers and KS work, even with 48 samples, There is one problem though:

- 44kHz (88,2,176) playback works, 48kHz (and multipliers that is 96,192) don't work properly. It's like listening to music in 'slow motion'. I guess that Prodigy 7.1 hifi has different clock on board for 48 and its multipliers.

I'd be very greatful if someone with Juli@ card could take a picture of EEPROM offsets. Juli@ has the same clocks as Cantatis, so my assumption is that it'd work for 48kHz playback as well.

* In order to do so, you need to run eeprw.exe (enclosed) in 'real' DOS mode, press 9 and take a picture of Juli@'s offsets. That's it, it'd take few seconds. (enclosed you will see EEPROM for Cantatis. I need offset values for JULi@)

* Note that eeprw works only under 'real' DOS mode, you can't run it from windows. In order to run DOS, there is a tool called  HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool + win98boot files (enclosed). With these 2 things you can prepare bootable usb flash. After a 'start disk' is created, copy eeprw to your flash drive, restart pc and boot from it.

Thank you in advance for help,
Marcin

Hi Marcin,

AFAIK Q1=1 + 1024 samples = Q1=0 + 2048 samples (half of buffer size value), so you're back home
Great! Wink Always these autosuggestions. I suffer from it probably the most. But why I got the buffererror at 1024? That should not happen if I use the right size or not? So following the instruction I must set it to 2048?

Yes. Check http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=1299.0 and my 'solution'.

Haha, nice memories Wink Thanktfully these days are gone and we live in a democratic country, are we?

I live in Wroclaw, also a beautiful city, but flowers are a bit more expensive here... :D
