106  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Making Galleries from a server trough the network is extremely slow.. on: February 20, 2015, 07:18:27 pm
..even having a max download of 60mb/s.

Is there another way to do this faster like extracting this collecting from my backup HDD having the same directory structure and then convert the created links to the server path where I want it to be?

This would be handy especially if in time I want to move the files to another drive or from the HDD if the server died... without the need to do it all over again.

107  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: XXHighEnd settings for the NOS1a on: February 20, 2015, 03:18:13 pm
"hey, and next leave all On as it is"

In other words better do not use LAN (for SQ) but an external HDD with all services down as before?

Using LAN (and from there a remote over WiFi)

In the 1.186-a (or 1.186-i) version of XXHighEnd it requires a trick to make all more convenient for you :

Boot into Normal OS Mode and go to the Services section in Settings. There denote Stop Desktop Services and Stop Remaining Services. Also denote Keep LAN Services (Persistent if you like but it doesn't matter).
N.b.: For Remote Control via RDC also denote "Use Remote Desktop".
Now reboot into Minimized OS.

Like this?

Go to Settings again and and now deactivate Stop Remaining Services as well as Stop Desktop Services.

Should I shut down more services for better SQ (NOS1a) or doesn't it matter? I do not need anything else than playing tracks from my NAS so if you have some more advice to optimize settings then these will be very much welcome...  Happy

PS RDC is the next step so please keep this in mind when you answer.  Wink
109  Ultimate Audio Playback / Orelino / Orelo MKII Loudspeakers / Re: Sound of the Orelo MKII on: April 03, 2014, 12:14:26 pm

...while I listen off axis, Bert listens on-axis.

Correction, I don't (never do/did) and prefer to have the speakers crossing in front of me (my room) and when possible (not an option with my Orelo's) pointing them up 5-10 degrees as well to have all early reflections in another direction than to my ears.

Sitting in the so called triangle then gives a perfect picture of the recorded space as seen by the microphones. But this is a whole other discussion...

There is not just one single way to enjoy!  Wink

Pointing them out works well too (I do not disagree) but only when the first direct reflections are not being directed directly to my ears which is the case when I toe them out here (my room is too small). And then still it is a matter of preference... some like it hot and others simple don't.

As a side note; I do have plenty experiences with horns and have heard the Orpheans and the other Oris horns in a lot of different spaces/environments...  Happy

I have heard many horn setups (including Orphean) over the years and without exception what I hear is - well I hear a "horn". A very distinctive sound the horn has to my ears. Very impressive, very dynamic, very forward, very fast - but at the end of the day they always sound to me - well they sound like "horns".

First I have to say is that since the Swing and related Orphean horns many things have changed...and as for your hearing concerns I do agree that you'll always hear it when a horn is playing simply because it is a very directive sound, the opposite of diffuse.

Another effect is a typical sound due to reflections (all sound is "forced" to go in one direction) but this effect goes away completely once you're getting used to them. I only hear it when I am back from Holidays. Otherwise my brain is filtering this out leaving only the clear, dynamic and effortlessness sound with super focus no other type of speaker can do equally well.

I am not sure what you hear/experience but spend a few days with a good and neutral horn (like the Orphean M3) and get used to that. If you then still not like the presentation then it is mostly the "in-your-face" feeling you do not like and then you'll need more distance from the speakers to reduce that effect.

Once living with a set of decent horn speakers and you'll never want anything else...  yes

111  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: SQ of 1.186, best ever! (Again) on: April 03, 2014, 05:32:54 am
XXHighend on Windows 8 went at top and I will not miss Windows 7 again.

I am cured from W7 as well with the new settings so I have updated my signature. W8 does not show the harshness and the weird artificial ambiance anymore.

W8: Very detailed with clean powerful and tuneful bass where absolute phase makes a clear difference again (especially in the bass!)

W7: Nah, just forget this option...

112  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: Sony Blu Ray player - never again!!! on: April 01, 2014, 09:18:13 am
And will a Blu Ray disc go in there Bert ? (I just don't know - I am used to computers only Wink)

No problem at all. DVD, CD and Bluray and even a HDD bracket if you desire. And viewing your photo collection is an option as well and if you have 3D then.... no problem either. ;-)

http://dune-hd.com/eng/products/full_hd_media_players/37

For Bluray options (sans 3D) they have the smart series.

But I am sure if you would search for Bluray + Mediaplayer there will be other brands to find as well.

- any thoughts?

Why not using a decent media player with a harddrive?

I haven't used a Bluray or DVD-player for years! Best part is that I do not have to watch all those warnings, commercials and previews... just hit play and the movie starts!

114  Ultimate Audio Playback / Orelino / Orelo MKII Loudspeakers / Re: Difference beteen Orelino and Orelo MKII ? on: March 25, 2014, 12:04:12 pm
But might someone really want it, technically the reference level (no sub-low audible distortion) of 88dBSPL will go to 94dBSPL (at straight to 19Hz). Not sure who would need that, but in the end it could be about a very (very !) large room.

I would! ;-)

And serious about this too because it is not just dB's, think about even less distortion at the same 88dB (not sure if you can hear that...) but do not forget the d'Apolito configuration creating an ideal point source.

But BIG indeed and think that the Orelo MkI is a system I've build solely for myself without thinking about future commercial options. Therefore the Orelino was born and the present Orelo MkII which do perform outstanding as well where both could become some sort of MkI too with an extra bass section on top.

In terms of SQ, how much of a compromise are the MkIIs over the mighty MkIs?

Hi Mani,

Focus, this is something I always pursuit. Sometimes a big wide stage with music anywhere in your room is pretty cool too but that's mostly a free bonus when you have a big room supporting that as long as the speakers are able to fill the extra volume of course.

Peter has a BIG room, mine is moderate are relative small and I can imagine why Peter likes his setup more simply because of that.

My system is therefore more intimate, dreaming away on the couch listening to my favourite music but sometimes I want to have that big stage as well.

The main plus for the MkI's is their ability to focus more precise with the extra set of woofers on top. This creates a virtual center for the bass similar as the point source acting mid-high horns. All sound is basically coming from one single point, the main reason why I always liked full-range drivers in the past.

The extra bass drivers give more headroom (not really needed in my room!) in the bass with fewer vertical standing wave problems as a bonus.

But didn't Peter tell you that there is also the option to have an extra bass section on top of the Orelino and Orelo MkII?

At extra costs though and if you didn't know then now you do! ;-)

116  Ultimate Audio Playback / Orelino / Orelo MKII Loudspeakers / Re: Triple Amplification on: March 14, 2014, 10:03:16 am
Two things caught my attention, though.  You mentioned three amps but aren't there only two driver types?

Quadriple even! The bass channel uses a brigded amp giving double the power for extra headroom...  Wink

117  Ultimate Audio Playback / Orelino / Orelo MKII Loudspeakers / Difference beteen Orelino and Orelo MKII ? on: March 12, 2014, 08:45:37 am
And this MKII what does that mean.

First there was the Orelo MkI, then the Orelino and now we have the Orelo MkII.

The Orelo MkI was demonstrated 2 years ago at the xfi show and is still my reference  (a bit tall for most), last year I've launched the Orelino as a way more domestic solution and now we have the Orelo MkII which is something in between.

Although, completely revised making it a new design with new features and better performance within the given possibilities. The Orelino following most of these developments and is now basically the "Baby" Orelo MkII and should be named Orelino M2 actually.

References for the Orelo MkI and Orelino can be found on this forum as well...

START A:\%XXHE%\XXHighEnd.exe

And this one I don't understand at all. Starting of XXHighEnd shouldn't be part of this.

Can I ask why Peter?  I press the power button on my computer and windows boots, automatically creates and populates the RAMdisks and then starts XXHighEnd from RAMdisk.  It works well!

Anthony

Starting XX from ImDisc directly using the batch file (nested in the auto start directory) does not work for me.

I need to create a shortcut from the RamDrive to have XX started from there and not from C:

119  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Volume Normalisation on: February 09, 2014, 03:07:33 pm
I didn't check it really, but Normalizing with another album as the reference won't matter for the generated data.

Cool, if it does not matter for the generated XXAnalysis.dat files then its okay and the normalized process does not have to be repeated.

I can then also play any Album brought and normalized by others using my own reference.

120  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Volume Normalisation on: February 09, 2014, 10:37:52 am
After all albums are Normalized using a certain album as reference it would be convenient if all work not has to be done again if I another album is going to be used as reference.

Is this the case or do we need to re-normalize all albums again?
