406  Ultimate Audio Playback / Interesting Music / Testmaterial / Test track with distortion which isn't there... on: June 24, 2007, 08:29:19 pm
....weird name for a topic but still it is true. I found a small piece at the start of a track which is recorded very softly which apparently seems to be a hard case for players. I heard this go wrong under XX Engine #2 Doubled under XP and also under Vista using doubling and/or upsampling.

Without upsampling and playing at 44k1 this sounded okay without distortion. Today I tried the track again under Vista #3 (XX version 0.9) with doubling and with upsampling and now it sounds okay no matter what I do with the player.

Something somewhere sometimes can go wrong and probably not just under XX or using upsampling or not. Perhaps nice to try at home to hear if you recognise a piano playing with a small bell "singing" continiously. If not then there is something wrong with your playback...

Play it loud cause it is a rather low level part of the recording, it will end before it gets loud so no worries (unless you have another track selected after that one!).

I am awaiting an explanation from each of them as to why this may eradicate glitches. Till then, does anyone have an opinion on whether this might correct the fault? Wink

Hi Chris,

I had used a firewire card at first, with hickups....later with the updates the hicks dissapeared. Later I changed the MB (it died) for a similar one without hickups but using the lastest drivers. After another change for a new MB (now with Firewire on board) and still no hickups but added a separate Firewire card (800) for using it with my Firewire 800 backup discs still no hicups but somehow the sound was better...?

The old Dell laptop had a firewire on board, never had a problem with it...

How's the background service doing?

OK for any other readers that might be having glitches or drop-outs using Vista OS here are some suggested cures from trawling the Web and talking to others. I have tried them all and none work for me.

Hi Chris,

I am not sure if it is Vista doing this...I have had glitches too before updating chipset drivers on both Vista and XP (dual boot on the same PC). I did change other things too so I am not sure what cured it...

Perhaps it helps to set the priority to background services...

Its a bit deep down but try to locate it starting in the configuration panel, double click on system, double click on Advanced Settings, double click on Performance, double click on advanced and then select Background Services.

All is translated from Dutch though and each next option described above is found when the new window is open...

If you can't find it then I will make a screen dump of the open menu's and post these here..

They uploaded the updated drivers for the soundcard, but no better, and now they tell me the soundcard in my new Inspiron 6400 PC is not specified to cover the sampling frequencies I want (up to 192Khz). Apparently it only works over the range 40Hz to 15Khz!!!!

Hi Chris,

Your soundcard has nothing to do with your problem and if it does interfere somehow and you do not need it for something else then why do not uninstall the drivers for it or just turn it off?

You'll need properly working chipset drivers for the mobo itself, not for the soundcard...

Additionally...

While you update the software driver then you should accept it while installing and after you have updated the software drivers for the fireface then you should see the annoying Vista warning asking if you want to use it....

Unless you did not change the rights to prevent that such message shows for the previous drivers, then it will show each time you reboot the PC....

What numbers does the FireFace show (TAB: "about" in the configuration window)
411  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: XXHighEnd-08a - feedback on: June 19, 2007, 11:58:27 pm
Twice when XX timed out, it rebooted my computer stop - first time any of the engines have done this.

My PC rebooted today once and that was when I was playing with the sample settings in the FirFace configuration menu with XX still playing. Everytime you change something on the fireface or XX settings then do restart XX to prevent that the fireface drivers get confused and trigger a blue/black screen and a reboot...

128 samples and all works well onder Vista and XX #3 (single, double and upsampling). No skipping here....

Do you use the latest fireface software driver and also the latest hardware driver (updating the fireface itself)?

Nothing changed here, "same" SideBySide error...the logbook shows a different error in the detailed report though.

Same error message too when I directly want to open XX#3.exe

Best would be if you would pickup my Laptop and see for yourself what is changing instead of me making screendumps over and over again...

But this obviously should not necessary for you out there (so do NOT download that, evenif you're developing software -> away goes the testcase !).

I could download it and install it on my Laptop just to see if XX#3 then works, I will then have at least 2 different Vista versions running trying to find the needed files to make it work on the other PC.

Or you should compile the needed files within XX or add an install.exe so that we only have the needed files at the proper place...

Error code: The application has failed to start because ist side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more details.

I get the same error when I want to start XXHighEnd#3 directly from within the directory, selecting it from within XX (I thought that would be the way to choose between 1, 2 and 3?) then I do not get any error. It doesn't play though...only #1 and #2 are playing tracks.

Bert, why can't (or don't) you tell what you did with upgrading your mobo drivers ? ...

Where do you normally get the latest drivers from? And if you have downloaded them, how did you upgraded?

For me obvious and therefore no reason to explain any further...???

Okay, then it is not the raw data but something else delaying the data "stream"

FireFace 400:

Driver date: 10.04.07
Driver version: 2.66
Hardware version: 1.63

Perhaps you can set XX' priorities higher?

I think Bert also has a Dell Inspiron so hopefully he will pop up with a solution. whistle

Hi Chris,

Never had the problem with my 2 year old Dell (only using XP) but did have some hickup problems with my PC (solved that after updating to the latest drivers for the mobo).

Perhaps the data of the track is corrupt? That can cause severe hickups too...

Hard to tell from a disctance what you should change to prevent this from happening...

I am running XX on Vista (48kHz) with the fireface at 48 samples and no errors (except "demo expired" occasionally...)

Dont suppose you know if windows media player can be sent though this way, and what Fireface settings would apply?

Windows Media Player will play through the standard sound device.....

It will play through the FireFace, no problem.

Only problem could be the mixer.....you have to tell the FireFace mixer which input goes to which output...

Enjoy!

I am confused by the Audio Properties selection drop down menu which gives me about 18 options for the Fireface 400 - Analogue, ADAT, SPDIF, all with or without MME (whatever that is grazy)

Which one should I choose to send music via the firewire?

Under XP choose ADAT 1+2 MME for engine #1 (and make that the standard sound device) or SPDIF (not MME) for engine #2 (+ making this the standard device in the sound options). Under Vista just SPDIF..

XP#1 will be highly unstable. You can add a list of tracks and play them but do not touch XX after, it will stop playing. XP#2 is stable...

If there's anyone around who wants to be a trial on installation attempts under Vista (but with some knowledge of how to attack errors please), let him/her speak !

Noooo, not again!!  heat

Hehe..

Let it come and I will get the thing started on my Vista somehow!  Happy
