I have literally tens, maybe hundreds, of HDCDs... and they're all doing the same thing:

I can set both Special and Adaptive to buffer=32 and Q1=1.
With Special, there is no sound at all in either channel.
With Adaptive, there is sound only in left channel.

I have tried increaing buffer/Q1 in Adaptive, but same thing remains - only sound in left channel.

In the scheme of things, this isn't a really big deal. I mean, I can play HDCDs with no AP, no problem...

Somehow (and don't ask me how exacty at this moment), the HDCD decoding is processed twice. For now the solution should be to turn it off in your processor ... if you can. AKA "in XX you can't either".

Hmm...

No, actually I meant the HDCD indicator in XX! (The indicator on my DAC definitely does NOT light up, as I'm using the vol control.) When playing a 16/44.1 HDCD, the HDCD indicator (in XX) goes off with AntiImage, and then plays as normal. But not for Linear or AP.

But it works for you? Strange. Maybe you have a non-HDCD version of The Ultra Zone?

One 'annoying' thing - the AP indicator keeps switching off when returning from Unattended or opening XX... This is more important, I think.

Just wanted to say that, yes. That's why I showed the picture (without sound, sorry ).

That things happen differently with AI I can imagine ... a matter of using the wrong sequence of things in the program (like first applying the upsampling, and then try whether it's HDCD encoded -> never tried it).
So, with AI it probably just doesn't work (the decoding).

What you mean with the flashing On/Off of AP ... never saw that either ...

Well, I don't know what's happening!

Over here:

- Engine#3 doesn't work at all - I mean for all files (HDCD, non-HDCD, all resolutions) for all buffers (set in soundcard, not XX) - I get 'XXEngine#3 has stopped working' error.
- Special doesn't work for 16.44.1 HDCDs - cursor/timer moves, but no sound.
- Adaptive's right channel doesn't work for 16/44.1 HDCDs.
- AP indicator switches off at resume UNLESS 'PeakExtend' is activated also.

Am I the only one with these errors?

The HDCD mystery is solved...

Even though 4x AP is selected, and the output is showing as 176000 in XX, this is NOT what is being actually being output. The output is 24/44.1. I had my DAC set to 24/176.4 (i.e. in dual-wire mode) instead of 24/44.1, so only one channel was working.

I got confused because of the 17600 output showing in XX - I thought the 24/44.1 file was being upsampled to 24/176.4. I know that at some point, XX will be able to upsample 24bit files, but I guess not yet!

I think this will need to be changed. I played around with HDCD.exe and didn't really like the results. I preferred the HDCD filter in my DAC. But even moreso, I preferred HDCD files with QAP.

I was straight to bed when i posted. I will elaborate:
The gui takes 3s to load compared to <1s. Then, when i click play it takes more than 5 seconds to start playing! Same settings as the previous version.
Moreover, the library is behaving slowly and weirdly like when you first introduced KS. Maybe some code rolled back? Maybe some optimizations are out?

BTW, ceteris paribus i THINK SQ improved (adaptive).

i'll talk about the GUI in the other thread.

Few remarks from my side:
- new GUI is nice, but quite unreadable (especially indicators next to the buttons and in settings area - I had to come closer to the screen to see if it's red or green, that's also confusing - red usually means that it's not active)
- I can't upsample 24bit files (wasn't able before as well)
- there's been a problem with application's window size and here is the same thing - one section appears on other. You should set fixed min. size of each section.

I know what you mean, but I'm afraid I can't do anything with it because as far as I can remember you always had the problem, and me myself and I dedicated it to you (to the sense of : couldn't interpret the problem well, caused it yourself etc. etc.), while at the same time I don't think I ever heard you solved it. ... Which is what you now imply.
In either case I don't recognize it, but I sure hope you read the Release Notes - about the scrollbar issues.

I don't think so. What I do think is that you set the OS font size to more than 100%, and there is no way to deal with that properly at going from 100% to (e.g.) 125% by means of explicit code. Very hard to explain, but what it comes down to is that you must fix the sections yourself (there are two splitter bars) and then it's okay.

Or otherwise just show your screen so I can see what you mean. Ok ?

But Special Mode does not work any more. Meaning lot of chraks tiks. Am i right and are the steps smaller when i set the buffer size to 4096 and like to fine tune with the Q1?

This is all going to be difficult I'm afraid. What I noticed is that for me it can be smaller now ! (and this was not expected).

Not exactly, but they are at different places (better : the steps are different).
What maybe (or hopefully) is the culprit here, is that for Special Mode you better set the Device Buffer Size to what it is in reality. This was NOT so before, and I didn't mention it in the Release Notes.

In the end it should be the other way around as what you perceive : the Special Mode "working" settings for Q1 should be far more easy to find. But this starts with setting the real buffer size as to how it is. To find that, use Adaptive Mode first (and see the ToolTip howto do it).

Please let me know whether this helps, because if so it has to be in the Release Notes (and the ToolTip etc.).

Yes, the problem went away in the third relase after KS was introduced. Now it went away after disabling the logs! The library is snappier than ever.

Found a bug (I think). XXHE takes a WAV as a HDCD and the WAV file is a redbook.

There are many CDs that are not identified as HDCD anywhere on their covers or inserts. E.g. the Steve Vai that I mentioned to Peter earlier.

But don't be disappointed with this - it just means that its been mastered using the best converter ever made

It interesting to see a small increase in HDCD CDs being released - e.g. the recently remastered series by Steve Hoffman.

That looks like a list of 'official' HDCD releases. The ones I'm talking about are things like 'Steve Vai - The Ultra Zone', 'Dave Brubeck - Time Out' and 'Jacques Loussier - Satie', etc...

Without opening up a whole HDCD discussion, these may have the HDCD flag included in the LSB (hence why they're being detected as HDCDs), but may not necessarily be recorded with Peak Extension. There is a debate as to whether this is a good or bad thing.

One error occurs sometimes. If the last track in the playlist is played, playback stops without reason after about 1 minute. It happens on the prevous version too.

I have some fear about my DAC because of the distortion I get if the Q1 values are not set right for special mode. I wanted to try the new version and made settings for special mode and presed play. after that I swiched on my dac...no sync. I plugged the CDP ... no sync. Wandering what has happend I opend the case of my DAC to look if something is not right with the connector. Eveything was fine. After several minutes I tried the CDP again. It worked..puhh. I startet mediaplayer and plugged my usb/spdif, it worked. Now XXHE. Ouch... a lot of distortions. I set the buffer size wrong as it turned out. I am not sure if this is dangerous for any dac but probably you can check the output if the signal is clean, before passing it to the soundcard.

Something very weird just happened. I've been listening to Diary of Dreams album when suddenly the sound disappeared. OK, I start XXHE again, push stop and play again - nothing. Looking for process in task manager, nothing strange. I change the sample rate, try to play a test tone in playback devices properties - dead silence. Quick restart, hit play in XXHE and get horrible distrortions followed by To many buffer errors window. WTF? Nothing has changed, I didn't change anything nor install a thing. It's on the same track that played very well before. Special modes confirms that sth is going on. I had to increase the buffer size to 2048, both for Adaptive and Special mode to get rid of distortions, but it doesn't play that well now. My question is: what happened during that faulty playback that caused all of this?

No real idea here, except from your PC maybe being busy with something. A driver fault seems more likely though. Try a reboot, and don't forget to set back the buffer size ...

This is no window breaking sound, hence no max-max voltage jumps as with static. And even then, your DAC should be able to cope with that.

Peter - I'm get a "HDCD decoding problem during decoding" error when decoding a FLAC encoded CD which XX has recognised as an HDCD in AP mode. No problems in AI or Linear mode. what gives?

Love the SQ (especially 'special' mode) by the way.

I like the new layout of the GUI a bit better in that the Q sliders are now more intuitively placed, as well as the double-octo slider thing (even though my DAC doesn't support 8x AP). Not sure about the knobs though or the way panels slide in and out. I find them a bit gimmicky. Am sure you're able to fit all the sliding panels on the same front panel no? Also the colour scheme is a bit.. er like something from the 80s.

These are just minor minor observations though, because I don't know enough to comment on what's under-the-hood other than that it sounds great and well worth the money!

In Adaptive mode, the smallest Device Buffer Size I can achieve is 256 with Q1=1.  Anything smaller and I get a "too many buffer errors" error after several seconds of playing. Is this consistent with others' experience?

I installed 0.9z on my office machine this lunchtime and had the same issue(s). I just unticked the 'ask each time' box and pressed Run. As you said, nothing happens. I then pressed Cancel. I did this for the next 4-5 occurances of this.

When you then close and re-open XX, it works fine.

But it'd be great if the bit depth and sample rate readouts didn't keep defaulting back to '0' once XX resumes from Unattended - it's really nice knowing exactly what's going in and what's coming out.

Help me please.  For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to get this thing to play music.  I don't use gallery.  I click on an artist in the left column, his albums then appear in the middle pane.  Before this new version I could double click on the album (or single click and then hit load) and then click on Play and I would get music.  Now when I try to double click I get the HDCD message. To get rid of this I click in an unused area and the message disappears, but is apparently still running.  (And are all of my WAV files really HDCD?)  Nothing ever appears in the playlist area.  How do I get an album pictured in the middle pane to play?

Hey Glynnw, I don't use galleries either. I'm not having your problem at all. Highlighting an album in left window, sends it to center window. Doule click and it loads here no problem. Maybe you should check log activities and send the appropriate file to Peter.

The only thing I can imagine is that the (internally set ! by the OS) buffer size of your soundcard changed without notice. So, if you'd repeat the procedure to find its buffer size, do you come to the same as before ?

But actually I don't have other answers than : the most strange.

Ineresting ... You may recall I mentioned this in the Release Notes, as I have it on one PC myself. And if I am correct there's an AMD in there. How this would relate (you have an AMF too it seems) ? dunno.

Keep in mind though : what I expect is that once the program in question is needed, you will be having the same probs, and just can't execute it.
The most strange (for me) is, that you prooved that before this was allright (unlike that PC of mine, which I never used for XX). So, can you perform FLAC conversions (if one of those programs you saw passing by indeed was FLAC.exe) ?

Not exactly, I lost "the rabbit" after I've done "don't know what or system has done it for me". I think it's much easier to have a dedicated pc just for xxhe - no network, no 3rd party apps, no additional drivers.

No.  Double click, tracks load; hit play and all works. Maybe I don't get that warning cause the hdcd.exe didn't install. I had to cancel most security warnings when installing cause, with most,  nothing happened when i clicked "Run". But everything seems to work here. A little weird....

Occasionally only two track in a list will play, even though when I hit play it looks like all the tracks get processed into memory. This seems to happen when i select a file from the library and double click it to load it. Thereafter, all looks good but only the first two tracks play.

In Unattended (not in Demo project) when I hit play, after an album has loaded, the tracks process--get highlighted in grey, then the GUI disappears, first two songs play and, then,  XX reappears as though it played the whole list! This has happened a number of times this morning (can't sleep, been up since 3 a.m.)

Again, this new GUI is very cool. Love the little red and yellow indicators for when a button is selected and is "processing". Also like the look of the chromatic blue lettering against black/grey.

So, this must be some cache issue, and I wasn't able to reproduce it at will. My feelings tell me that this happens after you played a selection (of two tracks ??).

Let me know wether you are able to reset this (or otherwise you are stuck with playing two tracks in a row only) per the above explanation.

Lastly, try to keep track of the End After Track button being active. A while ago I saw it happen that it was active each time after bringing up XXHE, while it shouldn't. When active playback should stop after one track (not two), but since it's illegally active in the first place ... maybe that causes it ?

There is also a played.dat in your XX folder (thus, not the data folder). Delete the other 2 again, but now also delete this one.

Because large redbook files were taking too long to process, I tried changing core appointment schemes from 2 to 3 to see if that would speed things up. It didn't. Instead I got the "Engine3.exe stopped working" which is really weird cause I was in Adaptive Mode. When I switched to Scheme 3, I did change the buffer to 4096, which was correct last time I checked several months ago. (Danny, how do you get a buffer of 256 with the Hiface?)

When I changed back to the Scheme 2 core appointment i got the "device allocated but can't play message" and had to reboot to get things going again. Frustrating.

9z has definately slowed down, in all ways, from when I first started using it. Opening a new album and hitting play takes several minutes for music to begin. I've also begun to experience dropouts with redbook files. That's never happened before; occasionally it would occurr with a high rez file but never 16/44.

Sound, however, remains great.

Yes I had shut off logging. My processor is 1.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, T5270. It definitely feels like my processor is being maxed out with the new GUI. When I tried to test some tracks in attended mode yesterday for a new playlist, I had way too many dropouts. Had to revert back to unattended.

Also, got bit by the playlist buttons yesterday. I had tracks playing and wanted to add another playlist. I selected the list that I wanted to add, and I'm so used to hitting the load button that I hit the save button and accidentally wiped out the tracks of the list I was trying to load! That list, the one I was trying to load, now names the list of tracks that were playing when I hit the save button. THis is mostly user error caused by a sudden spate of insomnia......Without a load button, its not possible to add a list to a currently playing list. Hope that makes sense.

However, the sound remains quite wonderful.

Something very weird just happened. I've been listening to Diary of Dreams album when suddenly the sound disappeared. OK, I start XXHE again, push stop and play again - nothing. Looking for process in task manager, nothing strange. I change the sample rate, try to play a test tone in playback devices properties - dead silence. Quick restart, hit play in XXHE and get horrible distrortions followed by To many buffer errors window.

I just experienced a similar situation.

I had an album playing in UNattended mode and it completed OK. 5 or so minutes later I went to queue up a fresh album, hit PLAY, and when the GUI disappeared a flash of a error message appeared, but happened so quick I was unable to read it. Thereafter I was greeted with silence. No coverart or anything was forthcoming. ALT-X'ed back to GUI and tried again with similar results. Tried same album in attended mode and still silence. Went into control panel but couldn't even produce test tones from "Sounds" applet.

So whatever happened during initial error, it mangled the resident audio driver code. A quick reboot and everything back to normal again.

Couldn't find anything amiss amongst the system logs either which might have identified that error message.

Will continue to monitor.

I did close down XXHE a few times and retried, but to no avail. I've seen that exception error pop up from time to time also, and I don't think it was one of those. The difficulty I had identifying the exact message contents was partly due to the text in the message being the same colour as the background. Casting my mind back to the event, I "think" i noticed ChangeWP consuming a heap of CPU cycles when I went looking into the process manager to check what might have been happening.

If (when) it happens again I will activate full logging and see if anything turns up thereafter.

In my instance of that subsequent error the GUI was waiting for me after UNattended play finished the last track. I can't say for certain how long it took for GUI to come up as I wasn't paying attention to music server at the time. Within 15 seconds sounds about right under normal conditions though.

Hi Peter, when trying to play an mp3 I ripped from a dvd back in 2006, I got the tag.exe security warning shown here. I assume it was part of the software I couldn't get to run when I installed 9z. I may have to try to find that dvd to rerip the file.......

that Tag.exe was compiled over 7 years ago now and wouldn't incorporate the publisher coding that Micro$oft likes everyone to include. My advise would be to take the tick out of the "Always ask before opening this file", then click on  "Run". You shouldn't be bothered again by that message following that course of action.

If you really want to know what it does, simply google Tag.exe , and read all about it in places like hydrogenaudio.org forums.

Also, if my DAC is 24/192 why does it default to 174 when I select Arc Prediction? When I select the 96 or 192 only button in the settings area and Anti Image then I get 192 but that option is not available in Arc Prediction? Sorry as you can tell I don't have a great understanding of device buffers and latency..

Thanks Russ, but the problem is that when I click "Run" nothing happens and I have to hit cancel for the security warning to go away. Leaves me unable to play the file. When I was first installing 9z many of the software components that generate security warnings failed to run when I hit run and now, it seems, parts of XX are not working.

Because Arc Prediction can only filter to / upsample to "even" sample rates. Thus, 44.1 to 88.2, 176.4, 352.8, 705.6. Or 48 to 96, 192, 384, 768.

Thanks for the clarifying. My DAC is capable of receiving 44.1/176 (which is what I am using now, but it is capable of going up to 48/192). so..

from this, I take it that it is possible for XX to upsample to 48/192. Do you know how I can do that? The octo slider seems to only allow one to select the multiple (i.e. 44.1X1, or 44.1X2 etc.) but not from 44.1 to 48. Sorry if I am missing something.

There is a base. This base can be anything. This base can be upsampled to even amounts (look at the two before mentioned rows). This is done with the slider (2x, 4x, etc.).
When you want to go from 44.1 to 96 or 192 you must make the "96 Khz / 192 KHz only" setting active (Settings Area), and when you now use 2x with a base of 44.1, 96 will be selected instead of 88.2. If you use 4x with a base of 44.1, 192 will be selected instead of 176.4. But keep in mind : The Anti Imaging filter will do it now.
There is no real useage in this, unless your DAC can't take 88.2 and 176.4 for input (and they do exist).

No, it's not related - it's one of my feaure requests.
I always wanted an "apply settings" button that will store all settings without having to quit xxhe and restart it. This was especially useful when xxhe would crash out of nowhere and all settings were lost.
Is it more clear now?

It didn't. But it is likely your PC got "slower", so to say. This is very normal, although when everybody makes programs without "memory leaks" it would not happen. Also, the switch of tracks puts a relatively heavy load on your low latency stuff. So, it only would need a slightly larger part to load - or more difficulties at reading the track from disk (the data for that track more scattered over the disk) to overdrive the limits. Remember, you adjust all yourself AT the limits. This is why, for example - when I can play with 4 samples of latency - I still use/apply 10 fold of it. So, I allow for the headroom needed in cases which are out of my control. Of course this is easy to say from someone who knows a little what's happening inside, but it still is is a good rule to apply in general; find the limits, and next allow for some headroom.

Great sound from 0.9z, but for now 0.9z only operating with Engine 4 (KS).
My laptop has built-in HD sound card that only seems to want to work with Engine 3 (non KS), up to 192-24.
I can listen by plugging in Logitech ear phones, but then limited to 48-16.
Is the plan to make 0.9z (or future version) work with Engine 3?

- Engine#3 doesn't work at all - I mean for all files (HDCD, non-HDCD, all resolutions) for all buffers (set in soundcard, not XX) - I get 'XXEngine#3 has stopped working' error.

For those interested, I added an XXEngine3-09-zb.zip in the original topic here : XXHighEnd Model 0.9z (with the final frontier : a GUI).

So, works again.

I can't be 100% sure, but this should be about those two OCX files I talk about in the Release Notes.
Notice that at this moment I don't know myself yet how to deal with this properly (while keeping away from a real install ), but you might help me a bit ...

Open a command window (cmd from the StartButton - Run), and go to your current XX folder (by means of cd [\folder] commands. Example :

cd \MyXXVersions\09zb\

In there, type
regsvr32 isanaloglibrary.ocx  (+ Enter)
regsvr32 isdigitallibrary.ocx  (+ Enter)

After each of the commands there should be a message that registration succeeded.

Yes the 0.9z sounds slightly better than the former version. There is a little more space/air between instruments but noticable.

Unfortunately I am having some problems getting Special to work without encountering distortion / stuttering. 

I find that after I set the device buffer and Q settings to match the DAC buffer, the player will start out okay until it needs to flip to the next track. At that point the distortion will start to occur. 

Also these problems seem to occur more when I am playing FLAC files (and especially if I have other processes or programs running in the background, such as unzipping or file transferring). I have switched off disk indexing so that is not a problem.

I don't experience any of this in Adaptive mode (which in my opinion doesn't sound as good as Special).

Will getting more RAM (I have 2 GBs) or CPU power help??

What will help the most (I think) is highering the buffer in the Weiss.
If you don't want to do that, try another Core Appointment Scheme (for these matters it is often the choice between 2 and 3).

Notice that the preloading / preparation (like FLAC decoding) is causing this, so it eats too much opposed to what your system can take.
Decreasing the Split File size will also help.

Let me know what comes from it.

hi Peter - I have spent the last few days experimenting with all types of combinations between buffer settings, file sizes, Qvalues and Core schemes. My conclusion is that they all help. In fact with scheme 4 with the highest buffer settings (2094), Q settings (2094) and lowest file sizes (100mb) I get some stability.

But... always.. after a certain amount of time the distortion will return. Also, my system sounds terrible under Scheme 4 (scheme 3 is the best).

But last night I installed 09z1 and used the following settings: adaptive mode, 2094 buffer, Q settings, 100mb file size and Scheme 3, and also moved the XX folder out of 'Program Files' onto my desktop. This combination seems to give me the best quality for the moment with no distortion (even better than Special), but I need to listen somemore. Will report back again with my result.

Suppose this still happens (but maybe later now), try to learn how the graph of your CPUs look like when all is fresh (reboot) and playback commences. Then, at the stage things are starting to distort, look at the CPU graphs again and see if it has changed.
If so, it should be the (Weiss) driver doing it, which you -with some experience- can see by comparing it with *no* playback is going on. Also notice that for a higher buffer size of 2048 this will be far less noticeable than for a buffer size of e.g. 64.

If you see anomalies here, you may check the Weiss website for newer drivers. Or older ...
