Hi Peter,
Suddenly XX isn't able to decode and play my flac files. I've tried all the usual, reboot, reinstall, also re-installed and tried 09-z2. Same problem all around. Mp3 files play fine.

No unicode file is created so naturally XX says "can't find unicode file.

Flac files play fine in J River.

I've attached a log file of an attempt to play a flac file.

Chris

Chris - I don't see it !

In your XX folder there's the FLAC.exe used for this. It's fairly easy to use from the command line (CMD.exe). You will see the errors directly from there.
Let me know if you need help with it.

... or what comes from it. Happy

Regards for now,
Peter

I don't understand. You don't see what? Are you referring to the log file? If so, here's the part of the log file that refers to flac.

23:18:30.3190000 : FLAC decoding start for processor 1 Output ++++ "UnicodeTrack0001.wav"

23:18:38.7385000 : Error reading (100 attempts) WAV header from : UnicodeTrack0001.wav

If not, I have no idea what you don't see.

By the way, I had tried switching the flac.exe from another version in case the original was corrupted. No dice, same problem. And as I mentioned flac works with other programs, so the flac decoder or the flac file can't be the problem as far as I can tell.

Chris

P.S. I did install the new version of Dbpoweramp converter recently to convert files to .wav for jplay. I don't see how that could affect files that haven't been touched by Dbpoweramp, and flac hasn't been updated for several years still... I don't get it.

Well, I figured out what's going on but not why.

Here's what's happening. XX can no longer find the flac files. It can find the others, like mp3, but not the flacs. My file system structure has not changed since it's inception years ago.

Here's a part of my structure (This is as deep as it goes)                                       Other folders/files on same level
Top Level QMultimedia
Level 1 Baroque-Early,                                                                                        Classical, Contemporary , Demo-Hi-res, Folk etc.
Level 2 Baroque-Early--Bach                                                                                Handel, Scarlatti, Various, Vivaldi
Level 3 Baroque-Early--Bach--Cantata                                                                  Concerti, Sonata, Vocal
Level 4 Baroque-Early--Bach--Cantata--51, 82a, 199, Dessay                                 61 Gardiner, 82a Bostridge
Level 5 Baroque-Early--Bach--Cantata--51, 82a, 199, Dessay--01 Aria.flac               02 Aria.Flac, 03 Aria.flac

I did a test. I took a flac file and moved it down one level at a time starting in Qmultimedia. XX only found it when I placed it on the top level and level 1. Lower down and it tries to decode every word in the path and comes back with an error for every word because the words of course are not flac files. It even dissects the individual words of the name of the track and tries to decode them individually.

Now remember, other programs find the flac files in this very same system, and XX finds other files e.g. mp3 and wav in this system.

So what could be going on? What's changed?

Chris

Sorry Chris. This will be a dutch thing. When I say "I don't see it" (and be so brief) I better could have said "I don't get it". So of course I saw the log file, including the error at FLAC decoding, but I don't get what's going on (suddenly).

Quote
So what could be going on? What's changed?

I'm afraid this is a question for you. Obviously nothing canged "by me" to the software.
You may have not changed the structure, but did change coverart (locations) ? (this matters)

If you look in the log files yourself, can you recognize that paths are wrong in there ? or anything else you wouldn't expect ?

You could try this one : How to delete a misbehaving ConfigFile, but it is hard to imagine how it can help. Still, some more unexpected solutions came from it for some.

I'm puzzled. Sorry.
Peter

PS: Your log file also shows this "error" for an MP3 file; This is about "older data" so to say, but still it is something which doesn't look right to me.

23:18:20.5705000 : AT Something wrong in data : :DATA:G:\Qmultimedia\Keith&spJarrett\Groups\At&spthe&spBlue&spNote;&sp1st&spSet\01&spAutumn&spLeaves.mp3:TIME:26:43.42:BITRATE:0256:TYPE:MP3:START:00:00.00:CV:G:\Qmultimedia\Keith&spJarrett\Groups\At&spthe&spBlue&spNote;&sp1st&spSet\folder.jpg:CB::VL:-0:VN:-0:IV:0:SB:0:SM:0:OS:0:FN:G:\Qmultimedia\Keith&spJarrett\Groups\At&spthe&spBlue&spNote;&sp1st&spSet\01&spAutumn&spLeaves.mp3

If this line is always there I think it could be causing something. But it is always there ?

Now I know better what's happening at your side, this occurs to me :

G:\Qmultimedia\Keith Jarrett\Groups\Changes\01FLYI~2.FLA

I see no reason why the ~2 is there and not ~1.
This can only happen when there's another track in there starting with the same (original = "01 Flyin") characters. But is there ?

Also see here : 09z-3: Message when tilde sign in trackname ... could it be the same problem ? hence ... this happens since you have W2008 SP1 (and if is that R2 ?).
(this seems dedicated to W7 SP1, although I can't copy it so far)

Peter, I haven't been on that computer since my last message (I wanted to listen to flac files so went to another computer  Happy ) so I can't answer all the questions.

I can say that I had tried many other flac files, they all exhibited the same problem. I also made sure that they had no unusual characters.

I'm guessing you didn't notice in my second message that these files played when I moved them to the first or second level of my file structure but not at any lower level. That should answer the questions, as it should have nothing to do with the file itself or its name.

I'm using completely up-to-date Windows 7, 64 bit on that computer, same as the other one which works (same file structure).

Could it have something to do with 8.3 filenames? Doesn't make sense but... I recently re-installed it, maybe they're turned off.

The mp3 error that you mention. I can't make head or tail of that line. What does it mean? What are all the "&sp", between the words?

I did not move any cover art, I hardly pay attention to it. If it's there fine, if not, maybe someday is my attitude. In fact if there's a way to shut off the cover art function of XX, let me know please. I really rather not waste memory on it  unhappy .

Of course I noticed this ... Because ...

... This is ALL about the 8.3 file names !

So what I suggest is that something is wrong with that, and now you say you recently re-installed it ?
Could be coincidence, but I don't think so.

And thus :

?

I don't think there is, and thus it is wrong.

I can't tell what you did with re-installing the Dos 8.3 short names, but notice that switching it on while it has been off needs a physical copy of the files in order to have everything right again ...
