Almost 5 years to double my download speed. Zero improvement on upload speed. Progress of a sort...

Will be trying XX2.03 later today and am especially keen to give Tidal a go. Although I'm aware that the internet speed will have no affect once the music starts playing (it will be 'pre-downloaded'), I'm assuming a faster download speed will reduce the time it takes from making a selection in Tidal to when the music actually starts in XX.

Mani.

I am in the middle of nowhere and coincidentally (or not) only last week I arranged for a small upgrade.
I was on 8Mb down and 384K up. Within a week from now it should be 44Mb down and 5Mb up. yes
But when I'm nice to the service guy it can be made 88Mb down and 5Mb up.

What's also important, is that in my main office - where currently a sheer 1Mb down and 1Mb up is in order, this will be 100Mb down and 100Mb up in a couple of weeks of time. Especially this latter was a big surprise to me because I got the idea that some strategy just did not allow high up speeds.

Now you'll understand my message about "in a couple of weeks of time people can download new Operating Systems (for 'the disk')". Currently this would be impossible.

Btw, I am curious myself how the Tidal speed will work out;
Already now (with my 8Mb down) it is very clear how the one album downloads way more slow than the other. As if they're not in the same location.

Regards,
Peter

Hi Peter,

Are you talking megabits or Megabytes ?

I recently got 15 (download) and 15 (upload) mbits (with optic fiber up to inside the house), but to tell the truth, the difference with before shows only whn downloading a big file. For the rest, it looks the same as when I had 5mbits download...

Alain

Alain - Mbits (small b).

Of course I can't tell about Canada or your specific area, but in general I could say that you must be careful not to be hoaxed. Two examples :

I don't think it still exists, but 10 years ago or so we had fast satellite (Internet) connections. I never obtained such a connection because of the super high latency. For example thinking RDC, it would not be possible to type (the host echoing the characters you see from your typing).

Today we have G4 for mobile phones (maybe even G5 ?). It is faster than my (still) current connection. PeterSt thought to apply some tricks with downloading etc. because he got an almost flat rate (many GB) subscription and would be way faster when the phone would be tithering the downloading PC's.
Does not work AT ALL (or at least not with a torrent).

Both examples can be seen by the Ping speed (also see Mani's picture). This is virtually the same as the latency I talked about. Or better : round trip latency. So if you'd need many connections per second (like a torrent works or how my speed of typing works (haha) then you don't observe speed at all. Otoh when you download large chunks of data (say like with the Tidal connection) then you have the base download speed (which is that other number in Mani's picture).

Concluded (sort of) : The speed like in "G4" doesn't tell much or at least not all. Some times the ping speed is more important (like with typing) which of course in the base also uses "download speed" and even "upload speed".

Anecdotal :
Our son, a typical today's gamer, learns on some forum how he can speed up his specific (!) game. Registry hacks and all and what happens is that the ACK(knowledgement)s are shut off. Smart, now no confirmation of receipt is send out and nothing at the other side needs to wait for it. The game is now 10x faster (pinging speed is eliminated) and the next day dad is called out for because of sudden errors all over the place, elsewhere.

Hi Peter, sorry it I took time to reply...

Many years ago, my girlfrient subscribed to a satellite internet service. The maximum bandwidth per day was quite limited, the speed was not above 1.5 mbits and the latency was awful. Not to mention the cost each month plus the initial antenna and cable installation...

We have been way behind other countries for speed and the monthly fare are high as opposed to the U.S. It's probable that our low density of population could explain the fare...

Anyway, since I do not have the intention of streaming music (I have enough on my hard drive for quite some time), I should stick with that speed for a few years, even if I am aware that it can go beyond 100 mbits... I am trying to understand how a distant and busy server may send data at this speed (thousands of requests from everywhere) so I should be happy for a while...

Regards,

Alain
