Hi Peter,

I just installed that card a few days ago. All work when I use another music software player, but as soon as I use XXHE, something happens and I get BSODs.

(for this example, I have tried in many modes, WASAPI, KS, high/low SFS, Q1 between 6 and 15, even 30, no PA).

When I start XXHE and play one song, all is fine. If I interrupt the song, I can restart it without a glitch. It's when the song plays until its end an I want to replay it (or I want to play another song), it does not start. So I press the "OFF" button to kill the xxengine3.exe. When I select play, the BSOD happens.

I have switched from my "alain" user to administrator (that I activated for this purpose). The behavior somewhat changes a little, as it gets harder to play the song (after the "OFF" that seems necessary). I have to retry quite a few times and then the BSOD again...

This does not happen when I use another USB connection (either USB 2 or USB 3 from the mobo), but with the SOTM - boom...

Like I said - this does not happen with the other music player that I have tried.

When I check in the System Event Viewer, the error seems to be WMI related. I goes like this:

I had to find that error on the net since my OS is in French and I doubt it would help...

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

This relates to the BSOD that I get (I guess) from the time it happens...

Regards,

Alain

No idea Alain, but I guess it tells nothing that another player is not bothered by it.

Thanks Peter, but I had done this already... Well, it looks as if it has something to do with the card driver... I will try other channels Wink

PS: Good research in the first place !

Peter,

After installing W8, I tried again to connect the Sotm USB PCIex to my Audiophilleo2 to check if the bug I had with W7 was still there.

It is unhappy

There is one thing I forgot to mention. I normally arrange not to mix different music formats because there are issues, so for this example, I use 16/44.1 music.

I select an album and let it play. All works fine. At the end, it stops by itself - fine also.

Then I select one song (or many, it does not make a difference, same format). The system restarts itself...

This was the behavior I got with W7. Jesus (from Sonore) told me a few months ago that the USB 3.0 driver made by Microsoft (I did not have to install the TI driver with W8) would resolve this. Obviously it didn't.

But I have an observation to make. Let's forget about the Sotm USB PCIex for a moment. When I play music, then I clear the playlist and start a new one (no matter how many songs selected, always same format), most of the times I have to kill the XXENGINE3 to allow the music to play.

Could this be a partial explanation for my problem with the Sotm card ? Is there an adjustment I could do to ensure that the buffers are "empty" ("flushed") completely ?

Is there something to investigate about this ?

For the moment, I use the Sotm card for my external hard drive, but I feel that it's wasted money...

Alain,

This looks a bit like "something" needs a more hard stop than what XXEngine3.exe does. So, killing that would be more hard.

Now *or* for 0.9z-7-5 I changed this rearding this, *or* this is for the due 0.9z-8. Now, assuming the latter (which is my idea about it), maybe retry with 0.9z-8 later. Do notice that I certainly changed things in this area, but while I wanted to implement this harder stop than I envisioned to be in there - it was already the hardest as could be.

Btw, this is not an easy area at all, and in the end (also) related to your beautifully found pitch problem. *That* was caused by a really too "soft" stop.

Okay, I just looked; last changes in this area are from October 20. So, after 0.9z-7-5 ...

Hi Tore,

Yes I have contacted Jesus (from Sonore US) with a description of my problem not long after I installed the card in my PC. He suggested I wait for Windows 8, since the USB 3.0 driver from Microsoft should cure the situation... But it did not.

Do you have the Sotm USB PCIex in your system ?

Thanks,

Alain

Hi Tore,

I did not realize that this address was different. I see that it relates to the main Sotm website ?

I will contact them. Thanks. Sorry for the confusion...

For the moment, I would not recommend to buy it, because of this...

Does the Buffalo card have something specific that you preferred to any other card (apart from the Sotm) ?

Hi Gerard,

Is this related to the SOtM card ? I mean, I don't think you have one. Or ?

Anyway, can't it be so that in your case you use an actually too high SFS ? Notice that I find 370 max to be reliable. Not higher (for 0.9z-7 that is).

Alain, FWIW :

I can't tell whether any USB3 new driver (in W8) will cure your problem. But what I do know is that the USB3 drivers in W8 are far from mature. This is known, and it is to be expected that MS will hand out upgrades for it. Not that I heard this, bit it seems obvious.

Hi Gerard,

Is this related to the SOtM card ? I mean, I don't think you have one. Or ?

Anyway, can't it be so that in your case you use an actually too high SFS ? Notice that I find 370 max to be reliable. Not higher (for 0.9z-7 that is).

Regards,
Peter

Peter,

Sorry no i have not a SOtM card. I use a SFS 10 at the moment.

Could it be possible to connect the Engine3 button to the stop button? So that Engine3 is alway's killed.

No. It is working on purpose like this.
But I don't recognize a thing of what you say ...
Of course many situations exist or may exist that something messes up in the audio engine. But nothing like "when I play somewhat longer, stop and want to play again, it won't work unless XXEngine3.exe is killed".

So maybe you can recognize what the specificness is about your issue ?

By the way, I tried the Sotm Card with W8, but the same happens... I play one or a few songs all in a row, all is good. When I press PLAY the next time = reboot...

I am beginning to have a collection of items that I am trying to apply to other tasks Wink

Alain, is that with 0.9z-8e ?
Remember, when you talked about such (similar ?) issues earlier it appeared to be the same in W7. But this is solved now in one of the later z-8 versions.

I tested it with 9-8, but as for the letter, I will have to verify... I did not write this at the right time, since I am not with W7... Please disregard it for the moment...

Ok, what I reported is with 9-8e...

After having this problem for so many months, I don't consider it urgent, as I have other means to play music. I am just disappointed having paid for a card that seems "difficult" to use. Maybe one day I will have a surprise  grazy
