Hi Peter,
This message appears now when I play a song. I have first to press "OK" to have it disappear, then I press Play again and it's ok.
I checked the settings and all is ok. My DAC needs 24 bit and plays up to 24/192. Nothing unusual.
Ah, there is also something that happens whenever I press "S" for the settings. A black box (like a cmd.exe box) appears briefly before the Settings appear (?)...

Hey Alain, Can you provide me the X3 and X3PB log files when this error message is on the screen (not later) ? Ah, there is also something that happens whenever I press "S" for the settings. A black box (like a cmd.exe box) appears briefly before the Settings appear (?)... If you mean that you press "S" when the Settings are on-screen, that could be correct but is not intended anyway. Oops... I posted too fast... For the second behaviour: a black screen opens (it does not take the full screen, it really looks like a cmd screen is opened and I can briefly see "C:\XXHIGHEND", that correspond to the folder where XXHIGHEND is... Hope all is ok... Thanks  Alain |

I have included the 2 files as requested for the first situation (the warning message). Does this message pop up during playback or something ? It really doesn't look like this is before any sound was heard. If you are not sure, please look at the times in the X3 vs X3PB log files. They should start with about the same times. These do not and what I'm looking for is lacking. But it really looks strange ! This is Engine#4, right ? Ok, what about killing XXEngine3.exe before a next attempt for the log files ? Sorry for the inconvenience ! |

I can tell that this message pops when I press Play. Nothing happens, then I see the Warning appears. In fact, I'd better say "Error" instead. After I press OK, the music does not start. Then if I press Play again, the music starts...

I finally was able to make sense out of your 4 log files posted. But nothing is in there that leads me to an error message; You will have had some (like you showed), but it is not logged.
I am tempted to ask : Is this repeatable ?
I mean, I have it sometimes as well (without recognizable reason).
You may try to tell me the sequence of happenings when you start out with XXEngine3.exe not in memory. For example :
- Killed sound engine;
- Play;
- Error message abc;
- Click away message;
- Play [plays];
- Stop;
- Play [plays].
- Killed sound engine;
- Play;
- Error message abc;
- ...
Such a sequence would indicate that the message happens one time only each time when the sound engine is started.
Btw, I do not have KS device in my W8 machine so I can't test it. Engine#3 (WASAPI) runs fine (ehm, no amps or anything connected).
Right now I am stuck on this one, so I hope you can help ...

I finally was able to make sense out of your 4 log files posted. But nothing is in there that leads me to an error message; You will have had some (like you showed), but it is not logged.
I am tempted to ask : Is this repeatable ?
I mean, I have it sometimes as well (without recognizable reason).
You may try to tell me the sequence of happenings when you start out with XXEngine3.exe not in memory. For example :
- Killed sound engine;
- Play;
- Error message abc;
- Click away message;
- Play [plays];
- Stop;
- Play [plays].
- Killed sound engine;
- Play;
- Error message abc;
- ...
Such a sequence would indicate that the message happens one time only each time when the sound engine is started.
Btw, I do not have KS device in my W8 machine so I can't test it. Engine#3 (WASAPI) runs fine (ehm, no amps or anything connected).
Right now I am stuck on this one, so I hope you can help ...

Is XXENGINE a "background" process normally ?
The first time I press Play and all works, the XXENGINE appears in the "background" processes.
Stop - still in "background" processes
Play - Error message, then XXENGINE appears in "application" processes
I press OK, then XXENGINE disappears
I press Play, XXENGINE starts in "background" processes...

Phew. No, I don't think this is normal or that I do anything about this. Seems good a finding !
Notice that with WASAPI I have no problems (started/stopped quite a few times).
Maybe it is related to the Priority settings ? What if you set them all to Normal ?
If that doesn't change, maybe try the Processor Appointment Scheme at "No Appointment" ?
About the log files ... maybe yes. I hope to see what sequence is taken in there. Can you, before you attach them, give them a sequence number 1,2,3,4 as how it chronologically happened ? So, look per type (XX, X3, X3PB) and for each X3 give them that number, the oldest being 1. Which X3 belongs to which X3PB etc. is for me to find out. The XX is important because in there I can see what your actions were (and how X3PB etc. dealt with it).

With WASAPI XXEngine3 always remains a background process. Tried all various settings which I think can be related, but nothing.
What I do notice (and I saw similar from your log files) is that WASAPI doesn't go to 10ms of ClockResolution anymore (when you ask for 15). So, that's a good thing.

With WASAPI XXEngine3 always remains a background process. Tried all various settings which I think can be related, but nothing.
What I do notice (and I saw similar from your log files) is that WASAPI doesn't go to 10ms of ClockResolution anymore (when you ask for 15). So, that's a good thing.
If I recall correctly, with WASAPI I will get a message if the clock resolution is anything different from 1ms. I just tried it, to finally remember I removed the message from XXHIGHEND folder  And true, with WASAPI, the XXENGINE is consistently staying in the background processes. No error. Now all is empty (log files erased). Starting XXHE... Processor cores = no appointment PlayerPrio = normal ThreadPrio = normal Play = good (xxengine3 in background) Stop (xxengine3 in BG) Play = Error (xxengine in foreground) First logs sent (except for the "general" log) EDIT: to have the possibility of copying the X3PB, I had to press Play again and get the error, since xxengine3 ceased its hold of the X3PB file... |

Exactly... I leave the process manager open, so as soon as the error appears, I see the xxengine disappears from background and appear in foreground processes... Windows 8 is quite interesting with its new display by groups (foreground aka "applications", background, then Windows processes)... |

Want you to test it ... hmm ... Point is, I have the hunch that you'll have the same problem in W7 and this hunch is given by the changes I applied in the area. And your log file adds to the thinking that it possibly isn't a W8 problem. This is crucial to me, because I would be looking for something which doesn't exist if it's in W7 just the same. In the mean time I do not see how I will have soon solved the MinOS problem. If every attempt takes a small hour to get back to the normal situation ... So I'd say W8 is quite unusable at this moment anyway, assumed MinOS brings the far better sound. Besides, I really must think and see what actually happens, because to me it looks mighty strange that booting into safe mode gives the exact situation (no desktop as it looks). It is just unmanagable this way, and I don't have the illusion that I will find anything about THIS in Google. Haha. But not-haha because where to go from here ? As I said, unmanagable. Ok, done with this sh*t for now. Maybe this nice "refresh" makes the install of the NOS1 driver work. Because that too I can't understand (works on W8 Consumer Preview). Bweh |

Peter, Maybe we should profit of what is working and from what I read from the others, I am missing a lot by being stubborn with Windows 8. Not to forget that today is Christmas ! I will go see my family I don't have any problem reverting to Windows 7 because I got a backup. I will be doing it in the following minutes. Hello,
I have the same problem but with some differences in W7. The sequence after rebooting is:
1 / The slider moves and the clock is running but there is no sound. I didn´t notice it initially because I had the DAC off in early tests.
2 / The Kernel error message appears.
3 / The music plays normally but there are two cases: if I don't press stop after the Kernel message and then press play the slider is forward; if I press stop after the Kernel message the slider is where it should be.
Killing the Engine3 after every stop is working for me to avoid those problems for now.

I have found a left-over of earlier debugging (which I should have removed and can now be considered a bug), and it can cause your both anomalies. Can you please check whether the below XXEngine3.exe solves your issue ?
Just unzip over your current 0.9z-8 XX folder but first kill XXEngine3.exe from memory.
Let me know the result please.

Hi Peter,
Replaced the engine3 with the new one and the next message appears (translated):
"sox.exe - Aplication error
The instruction in 0x00449652 is referred to memory in 0x00294000. Memory could not be read."
There is no music but an intermitent noise.
Replaced the original engine3 and only after several attempts things return to normal.

No, there is only one folder with the z8 version. I tried the z7-5 version after the OS was installed in order to activate it and then activate the z8 version but it didn't work (well it worked for Z7-5 but not for Z8) so I went back to a previous restore point with no XXHE versions at all. Since then only Z8 version was installed.
