Thanks Peter, that worked, though things are not completely bug free. A couple of times playback stopped in the middle of songs, and another couple of times playback wouldn't start when unattended. Also, unlike what you found, as soon as I put the "As Bar" back on it cuts out after 10 seconds again. But most of the time it works, and I've got it running from a RAMdisk now.
Wondering whether the custom filter is mainly for people with NOS1/1a and Orelos....
Since I have larger fonts set, the UI is pretty bad, with text overrunning many fields. I will have to adjust that.
Does 2.01 work at least somewhat now on Win10?

Last night I blew away the prior installs and reinstalled clean. There are still two bugs remaining (not those I mentioned yesterday, but others I considered minor in a relative sense so I didn't bring them up):
- Minimized OS, unattended: Starts fine but within ten seconds the volume stops completely. Since there's no UI I don't know whether it's stopped playing or is still playing but no volume.
- Minimized OS, unattended off: This is perfectly OK until I try playing unattended for the first time. Then all subsequent attempts to play with the UI showing prior to a reboot don't work. Playback won't start, and there is an odd thing going on with the UI where there's a sort of black "phantom loading progress bar" that progresses from left to right near the top of the XXHE UI.
So that's where I am now, unable to use 2.01 in minOS unattended.

About the logging off - I did allow Windows Update to install a bunch of updates, and you know no one can screw up a Windows installation like MS itself can. So it's possible something I switched off got turned back on. As I mentioned, I've never liked Win 8 as an OS, so I will probably forge on and try to install on the Win 10 preview. (I'm on the fast update track, so the build changes every week or so. Should be fun! )

- Actually it's not nearly my first XXHE install on Win 8. More like the 5th (but this one has its own folder - within the XXHE directory - as instructed). I have had Defender shut off since I first installed Win 8. Will re-check....
- I always select kernel streaming when doing the initial settings on install, so XXHE should not have been sending messages related to the selection of WASAPI.
- Strange about the copy procedure. Waited until the SSD installation was activated and just copied the whole 2.01 folder to the XXHE directory on RAMDisk. Anything special to do besides that?
- Don't mind losing the activation so much, just didn't want to bother you with the refund process. But as I'll probably just be blowing everything up anyway, I think, unless the sound quality is a complete and utter disaster, that I might prefer to make the next installation on Win 10. I've always disliked 8, and only kept it around for XXHE. Anything special regarding installing on 10? Is it best to install on SSD and copy to RAMDisk, or vice versa? And anything special about copying, or just copy and paste the whole folder?

So:
- Windows 8. (Still won't run on Windows 10, correct?)
- I initially installed to a RAMDisk, but then got the message my activation wouldn't last if done on a RAMDisk. I then installed on the internal SSD and activated that.
- After that I copied the 2.01 folder to the RAMDisk (leaving the SSD installation in place) and tried to run the copied version from RAMDisk. But I got little error messages about the DAC used previously not being the one selected currently (not so), and the XXHighEnd in the title bar flipped back from red (activated) to blue (not). So I went back to running from the SSD.
- These are the two problems that are now occurring when I run from the SSD, as well as I can remember while not at home (too late last night to write this then): (1) When trying to play minimized OS and Unattended, the OS logs off to the Login screen. (2) When trying to play, if I remember correctly, with minimized OS but not Unattended, the UI shows the track playing, but there is no sound, and when I stop XXHE I get an OS message that the sound device (driver?) has been deactivated, and do I want to troubleshoot it? This is with kernel streaming selected.
- Best to blow everything up and install again? (Though I'd like not to lose the activation.) Or something short of that?

Great discussion as usual.
Interesting that I've found myself a little discouraged reading through forums other than this one as it seems there is an awful lot of the same old things:
The same fruitless old arguments with both sides being wrong and no one interested in learning or explaining anything.
When good new information is available, failure to pay attention and consequent misinterpretation and confusion everywhere. (Two examples: the thousandth person saying the Uptone Audio Regen is all about isolation, in spite of Alex, John, and others patiently explaining otherwise 999 times; George (exa) patiently explaining why defeating the grounding provisions for his DAC is a bad idea and showing the noise measurements to prove it after he was taken to task for bad design(!), then another commenter happily saying he was using a linear power supply with the DAC in the exact way George had explained not to, and saying hey, it sounded pretty good to him.)
People saying DACs or cables or both do or don't sound different to them, using the same old language that explains nothing (more detailed versus more musical).
So no wonder the stuff sounds this way when they are marketing to people who don't make an effort to understand how things work and don't know what to listen for. (No, Peter, your ears don't suffer some "crazy offset," or if they do it is the same as mine, Mani's, etc.: we like to get as close as we can to reality. As I like to say, no one ever left a live concert raving about how "detailed" or "musical" the music was, so why should these be the things one listens for in a system if reality is the goal?)
I'd be curious about what you liked in Munich, Mani, if you are willing to say (if not, of course I will understand).
Speaking of future shows: I don't suppose there is any chance Phasure would go through the trouble to show at RMAF this October, is there? Because I'll be there. (My "price" for spending the second straight vacation with my wife getting things planned for our retirement home, which we'll be building in New Mexico in a year or two if all goes well.)

Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: New NOS1 = ?

Hmm... why does everyone think it's going to be a non-oversampling DAC? I mean, I just can't see how Peter could improve on a NOS1a B75 in this respect. Nah, I wouldn't be surprised if the new 'mother of all DACs' uses a different DAC chip to the BB1704U-K.
I've always loved the Greek symbol 'Σ' - i.e. Sigma. In mathematics this is the summation operator of course. The new DAC would be the summation of everything Peter has learned in his long audio journey. So for me, the 'Phasure Σ' would be an apt name. We could have a beautiful Σ inscribed on the DAC in silver or gold, just like the 'α' on the NOS1a.
Mine isn't the most original idea here though... some of the others really are great.
Mani.

Your D/A converter for ever.
NOD - "Never (an)Other DAC" NODD - Non-Oversampling DAC w/DSD (just speculating, probably wrong) Omega Zed ZeDAC (combines final letter of alphabet and "the DAC" as pronounced by a Francophone) I'm not reaching desperately here, oh no, not at all....

I am not near Peters age, but swimming messes with my ears quite a lot, and in a not dissimilar way to flying. I need to leave a couple of days after a swim before I am right for serious listening.
Haha; I wanted to add earlier that this is actually not the same as flying. I mean, you will surely notice *that*. So that is two-folded : one, you will clearly be totally deaf after a nice dive and two, because of that you will try as hard as you can to get your ears back (blow nose and such). Thus although the solution may be the same (blow nose) the lead-in is not at all. But I am fairly sure that many may benefit from just attempting to close the nose and have a firm blow until something pops and there's way more LF suddenly. You can always try ... (when the music is on or otherwise you won't even notice that it worked). Peter Not a "firm" blow, which can cause real damage. Hold your nostrils closed and try to blow air out through your nose *gently* until you feel your ears clear. This can be done on descent (plane or dive), not ascent.

Took a look at this and yeah, it works (even in minimized mode - besides what Peter mentioned, have to enable wifi direct in XXHE to get one of the necessary Win services for RDC to keep running when the OS is minimized). The bad news for me is that the "control PC" (my MacBook Pro) is what's connected to the main system, while the "audio PC" is up in my office running the desktop system. So I'm still restricted, for the main system, to XXHE running on Win 7 on the laptop. Oh well - still pretty nice.
