Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: RDP and XXHE aren’t compatible on my Win 7 PC

Can anyone confirm that remote desktop is working for them on a Windows 7 PC when XXHE is running?
My details are that I’m connecting to my PC wirelessly from both a macbook pro (using remote desktop connection), and an iPad (using jump desktop). Everything works fine unless I’m running XXHE on the PC. Is this working for anyone who is running Windows 7 (ultimate, 32-bit in my case)?
Thanks for your help!

Russ,
I like the way you think! I too reasoned that XXHE must be killing some process or service that is necessary to recreating the RDP connection. I played with the "stop services" setting before and did it again just now and it didn't make any difference. I mostly use attended mode anyway. Believe it or not, I can't find an alt key on the iPad! Anyway, I do think it is that XXHE is killing a necessary process/service. But which one? I'm hoping Peter has some ideas.
When you suggest other protocols, I'm really looking for something that will work on the iPad. That's my only limitation.
Thanks again, Russ. Dan

Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / RDP and XXHE aren’t compatible on my Win 7 PC

This is a bit long and involved, but please bear with me.
I remote control my PC with my macbook pro (using remote desktop connection) and my ipad (using jump desktop).
Both don’t work in exactly the same way.
The initial connection works fine but I often can’t reconnect even once, and almost never more than once. I have to reboot the PC and then I’m okay for the first and sometimes second connection, but then it stops reconnecting. I’ve been living with this with my MBP because I don’t have to reconnect very often. I just leave the connection up in a window. But if the connection breaks, I usually can’t reconnect until I reboot the PC. The iPad is another story. Since it doesn’t multitask, I want to disconnect and reconnect a lot: every time I used the iPad for something else (e.g. Safari).
This is not new to 0.9z.
It works fine if I’m not running XXHE. It even works fine if I’m running J. River. (It doesn’t realize how bad it sounds in comparison!) I can connect and reconnect all day long. So you see why I’ve concluded it’s a problem with XXHE.
I also have a Vista machine, and it works fine with that. I can reconnect at will, making the iPad a lovely remote control and more. But it’s my second (and clearly inferior) system. Where’s the joy in that?
Any idea of what the problem is or how I can troubleshoot further? I appreciate your help.

Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Is it possible to defeat HDCD in 9z?
|
on: May 31, 2010, 03:38:39 pm

Is it possible to defeat the new HDCD processing functionality? I think it's a great new feature, but my DAC is HDCD-capable so I don't necessarily need XXHE to do it.
When XXHE decodes the HDCD, what bit depth and word length does it send to the DAC? I would think it would need to send more than 16/44.1, which (to me) means that the DAC would have to be more than 16/44.1 and the "DAC is... " setting in XXHE would have to be set accordingly. Is that right?

Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: 0,9z installation not possible on Win7 64-bit Ultimate PL

Hooray! This new version fixes most my problems, too. I was experiencing a lot of the same problems as Jarek on both my machines, one Vista and one Win 7 ( both 32-bit).
I'm still getting fairly regularly .net unhandled exceptions. I can click "continue" and everything seems to go on without issues.
The new version even displays cover art in unattended mode, something the last 9z failed to do for me.
One new small problem though. When I alx-x out of unattended the music stops. I don't recall it working this way in the past. Am I wrong?

Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: SQ of 0.9z

Peter,
With 9z I'm preferring Adaptive, and I used to favor Special. I'll play around with increasing the buffer size to see how the sound changes. Do you have any objective way of determining what the optimal setting is - what I should listen or look for if it's too high or to low?
Thanks, Dan

Question for any HiFace users out there:
In Adaptive mode, the smallest Device Buffer Size I can achieve is 256 with Q1=1. Anything smaller and I get a "too many buffer errors" error after several seconds of playing. Is this consistent with others' experience?

Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Hiface Impressions

Mani,
I'm hoping the new interface that Berkeley Audio allegedly has under development will allow the DAC and the PC to have their clocks master-slaved. In that case, the HiFace, even its modded incarnation, will join my growing pile of obsolete interfaces. But in the meantime it's at least a fun and relatively inexpensive detour along the road to audiophile nirvana.

Just reporting that I got my jkeny-modded HiFace a couple days ago and think it is an appreciable and worthwhile improvement. There is significantly enhanced clarity which results in a much more spacious presentation of the sound, and there is a lot more “air”. The music really sparkles! I haven’t A/B’d this yet, but I’m confident that the modded Hiface will easily trounce me Lynx card. I opted for John’s new configuration which houses the battery and the HiFace in a black plastic box with the USB connecter in the rear and the BNC and 3.3V power connecters and on/off switch in the front. It’s definitely more professional looking than what I envisioned I’d be able to string together with batteries and wires piled up beside my computer. I have yet to get the final 5% (sonically, per John) working and that’s to supply 5V battery power to the HiFace as well. John and I are scratching our heads as to why this isn’t working. I think the modded USB cable he provided is bad, but the ball’s in my court to try John’s next debugging step. For now, the 95% improvement is certainly good enough for me! I think John is working on a new bigger black box that will incorporates the 3.3V and the 5.5V power supply. That will really be a big improvement from a usability standpoint. Okay, I’m not the most savvy guy when it comes to DIY electronics, but I had a ton of questions to get this far and since I’m not over the finish line yet, I obviously have several more to get the 5V working. Though my little black box is a big step up from a hacked HiFace with a battery by it’s side, John won’t be done until all of the stuff is in a single “set it and forget it” box. I guess my only real question back to John will be if he’s willing to take mine back for a trade-up! It certainly sounds good enough that it’s worth staying the course.
