When I reboot the machine via RDC, RDC cannot connect again until I log in directly.  This means that I cannot run it headless, or at least have to connect a monitor & keyboard when rebooting.  This seems most inconvenient - is there a way around it anyone knows?

(Yes, I'm a Windows newb, having used nothing but Mac OS X for over 10 years now.  Macs do not behave this way with Screen Sharing, but then it's apparent that RDC is fundamentally different than Screen Sharing: With RDC you're actually logging into the machine again, not just controlling the screen remotely.)

Paul,

Do you have something like an iPad around ? At least that is used by people (did that over here as well). So if you have the same issues with that, it must be some pilot error.
Also, people don't have much reason to control XXHighEnd remotely by a Mini or something (at least that is what I think). IOW, we might not have the experience you seek. With an iPad (or other tablet or even phone) this is a different matter.

I'd say that Remote Desktop (for Mac) is just that, but maybe it is not. You are using the Microsoft product, right ?
RD is working as smooth (if not smoother) than RDC itself. Also on Android.

Peter

PS: No, "we" don't need to log in. Only a first time, but check (somewhere) that asking for the Credentials should not happen a next time.

I now see that my remark about the iPad isn't much viable. So never mind that test.

Hi Paul,

You have to set automatic log-in into your (headless) audio-PC.
Follow this link and read / apply 'Method 2": http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-automatically-login-in-windows-10/

I'm using my Mac laptop, as I've said.  I've never indicated I was trying to control the PC from a Mini - what I have said is that my former music server was a Mini.  The Mini is in the box now.

All kinds of people use Mac laptops around the house, of course.  They are hugely popular, at least in this country.  I prefer a laptop to a tablet as its far more versatile.

Yes, Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac.  (As for the "RDC" acronym - perhaps that has a different meaning!  My bad there.)

This is what I'm talking about: If I have the monitor (that I still have connected to the Phasure PC for the time being) on, and logged in, *when I start MS RD on the Mac that session on the PC is closed*.  The monitor goes back to the login screen.  So clearly the system is not allowing simultaneous control or simultaneous login.  This isn't necessarily good or bad; just an observation.

So, I don't think I have an odd use case here at all, but probably I am missing something regarding Windows/Remote Desktop.

Indeed that must be the little nugget missing!  Thanks.

EDIT: I have to ask, why won't Method 1 work?  (Best not to touch Regedit unless necessary, eh?)

Hey Paul,

Did you ? scratching

Hugely important (not Happy). The importance is that this is OSX and not IOS. This with the notice that RD for both will be different and I dn't know the OSX situation. Hopefully others do.

*when I start MS RD on the Mac that session on the PC is closed*.  The monitor goes back to the login screen.  So clearly the system is not allowing simultaneous control or simultaneous login.

Wrong conclusion that that's related. This happens all the time everywhere (unless you use Windows Terminal Server, which is not applicable here, or hack a few things (also a no-go)).
Trust me that I never log in anywhere, but as said, the system does that for you (if all is right and when RD for the Mac allows for it which I don't know).

If Georg's trick works, all is fine of course.

One thing in addition :
Each time I restart the RDC connection from a Windows tablet (but after a (settable) time), RDC asks for the UserID and Password. This is NOT related to what your issue is, but it happens anyway (at least that is what I think). Press Cancel there and you're in ...

Peter

PS: Be careful that you did not answer questions like this :
a. Automatically apply these credentials ? (Paul answers No);
b. Ask this the next time ? (Paul answers No).
because now you're cornered. And these things DO exist (in Windows they do, and such questions can come from the Windows (remote) screen).

Hi again Paul. It is better and I could even say 'obligatory' logging in with password.
Not so important for 'audioPC' itself, however, you have your music stored on other PC/NAS/USB/etc. 'storage' and without authenticated login, XXHE will not be able
to write meta-data info in such music folders. Plus, you will not be able to fully control files / folders from 'audioPC' (via RDC). Practical meaning: if you decide f.e. to
change or resize some album photo, you will not have sufficient rights on remote HDD's. You will not be able to create new folder, change name or delete existing one's.
All things you normally do via 'Windows Explorer'

Ah, I see: Method 1 bypasses auth altogether.  Yeah, not good.
