Hi All,

Hope this is the correct place to ask this.  I have a PC that I built for music connected by USB to the Twindac+ currently using XP and engine 1.

The question is what would be the best route to get Vista?   My motherboard is socket 478 and my current processor is a 2.4gig Celeron with 256MB of RAM.  This would limit me to a Pentium4 and additional memory which I think would be OK for Vista.

Another route would be to upgrade the motherboard and processor to get the dual core features...

...and yet another route would be to buy a laptop with Vista and build an external memory bank etc.

Your views would be much appreciated  thankyou

When I went from XP to Vista on my laptop (from a format), I upgraded from 512MB to 2GB,,, I think I'm glad I at least have that much for Vista running audio... but dunno for sure how low you can go before SQ and speed of loading large wav files suffers for you.

Hi Brian,

I think the cheapest way is the new motherboard, assuming (!) that the Celeron isn't worth much (for Vista in general).
Also, you'd be able then to mount a couple of additional harddisks when needed.

Personally I'd never go the laptop route, because they (very often) bring more problems than conveniency.
Note that for the conveniency of playback (you behind the knobs) there are other means, unrelated to the PC actually doing the job of playback. Now do think of a laptop (or even smaller) and the means of RDC (before called RDP), or maybe the "ultimate" ... a small (maybe touch sensitive) display just connected to a long cable to the big machine somewhere hidden. Same for the keyboard (both can cope with runs of 15 meters). They keyboard can be connected by infrared of course, if it doesn't disturb the sound.

If you go tge RDC route, be sure to buy a Vista version that supports it (on your "new" the playback machine).

First and foremost, ram upgrade. to 2 gigs. New cpu also if u wish.
Then a fresh install of Vista home premium or ultimate.
