I haven't tweaked Vista much ... ( i think on my next install I might try to shut down as many services as possible for fun...), but, I did try shutting down Superfetch in Vista.  It seems to have greatly cut down on HDD activity.  System is sounding very good right now... but it has been, so i dunno.  But I'm amazed at how the HDD activity light is not blinking away like it use to.

I myself have tweaked Vista to (be) dead. I am using those tweaks for a month now without problem.
I saved (screen copies) all the settings I changed for you out there. But I still must post them. Superfetch indeed is one of them.

Look forward to that Peter. I would still like to lower my latency figures without glitches, though I have been happily enjoying the system for some time now.

Music on external hard drive with own power supply. Brains of the system is a Raspberry Pi running Moode Audio. The RPI has dedicated Longdog audio linear power supply.
Signal passes first to SW1X Signature USB to SPDIF  converter
Then to SW1X Signature DAC
Then to Stevens and Billington TVC
Then to modified vintage triode amplifier
Then to open baffle speakers with vintage alnico drivers. Grundig tweeter, Saba Greencone midrange, Altec 416 VOTT base.
Everything is silver wired including mains and speaker cables
