16  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Windows 10 Tweaks on: August 13, 2015, 09:07:41 pm

Esau, you certainly are correct there. That is, if you mean to say that what has been done to 10074 also must be done for RTM, officially.

Regards,
Peter

I have some small idea how busy you are, so I say this in a gently encouraging way and not to nag:  An "official" XXHE version for Win 10 RTM will be most welcome whenever you are able to do it.
17  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd PC / Re: XXHighEnd PC with Windows 10 from RAM on: July 27, 2015, 07:08:28 pm
Dave,

Do you plan on using the official Windows 10 version when it is released?

Difficult to say at this moment. One answer is :
I see many more reasons why *not* to do that, than do it. Anyway I myself have no single reason to do it.
Additionally, it will only mean work for me. It takes one thing only to do nothing : keep that 10074 build available (and I will take care of that anyway).

Also notice - and this may not be so obvious to everyone - that the 10074 build *really* is free, does not show nasty adds(ware) and does NOT require an existing W8(.1) or W7 license. The final build will (and you will lose the licensing right on the other one. Of course you can normally buy Windows 10 to avoid issues in this context.
Summarized : W10 is not free at all. You're hoaxed to some extent. Still, such a Preview is free, but don't ask me how long it will last. I could not find data on that (like the W8 Consumer preview worked for 15 or so months only).

Regards,
Peter

Hi Joachim,

I stopped at the 4th or so post with this in it :

Have fun tbone. go wank alone.

Peter

Of course you were quite right.

I just went right to the end, and at least they are talking about ice cream rather than audio now.

Just wondering whether simply installing the "stable" OS to one disc and any "experimental" OSes to another would suffice....  Suppose not.

Jud, yes. That is what I mean. But it seems too simple to not understand so I'm afraid I may not understand you now. Haha.

Peter

Both drives connected at the same time, or are you bothering to plug and unplug?

In any case, a backup eliminates any worry in the event a restore doesn't work, and we've all got backups, right?  Happy

Never fear, Mani, there's a new NSX that may be even better:

- Minimized OS, unattended: Starts fine but within ten seconds the volume stops completely.  Since there's no UI I don't know whether it's stopped playing or is still playing but no volume.

- Minimized OS, unattended off: This is perfectly OK until I try playing unattended for the first time.  Then all subsequent attempts to play with the UI showing prior to a reboot don't work.  Playback won't start, and there is an odd thing going on with the UI where there's a sort of black "phantom loading progress bar" that progresses from left to right near the top of the XXHE UI.

Hi Jud,

I wondered ... are you (still) able to mimic this at will ? If so, how ?
I saw it myself but for the life of me I can let it happen any more. It is as if this happens right after an install only. At least that is where it happened to me and I recall something like having problems with it after each boot.

Of course I now like to solve it, but ...

Peter

Hi Peter -

I'll check tonight if I have time, otherwise in the next couple of days.

Answer unfortunately is still yes.  As bar on, sound cuts out in ~10-12 seconds.  Off, it stays on as long as I like.

This is not really what I have in mind (at this moment); What I am afraid of is that the RTM version will be so much different that the SQ will be vanished. Of course I can't tell yet, but I see better value in explicitly NOT anticipating a next version.
Maybe people don't have experience much with W8.1 or the difference with 8.0, but for me there's no single way that W8.1 will ever play in my system - that bad. And so this is what we can be afraid of.

How long we can preserve (keep on running) such a Preview build, I don't know. Maybe forever, maybe till the end of the year, etc.

Peter

I seem to remember several months with previous versions, or maybe until the public release.  Perhaps it will be different with this one, since it's a free upgrade.

Ah ...

What about setting the Scaling smaller ?
If you set ity to 1.7 it will be the same as it was (1.186).

Peter

Will that affect Remote, or different settings?

Actually - This *is* set to 1.7, I just checked.

So I tried 1.5.  Everything looks exactly the same, no change at all.

Hi Jud,

I just check it. When you are going to the link mentioned under reply#8, and go to Englisch, you still get.

Joachim

Hi Joachim - right, 10074 is the last build that is available as an iso.  As Peter says, don't connect to the Internet after you've installed the iso, because if you do, Win 10 build updates will occur automatically whether you want them or not.

For myself, contrary to my usual eagerness to try anything new, I think perhaps I will wait.  Though I do indeed anticipate running XXHE on Win 10, there is no reason for Peter to chase a changing target.  So I assume the next build Peter will work with after 10074 will be the official public release.  Time enough to install XXHE once that happens.  (Of course if I am wrong and there is an XXHE 2.x that works with whatever Win10 build I have at the time, I will likely install it.)
29  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: My first Windows 10 experience on: June 03, 2015, 02:41:26 pm
However, I was only able to grab 10134, which is now the current version.

Hi Michael,

Are you sure about this 10134 ?
Not that I don't trust you, but I see nothing of this build anywhere. Is this what you downloaded from the page I gave ? or is this what you received through an upgrade ?

Thanks ...
Peter

As of last night, on the "fast" Windows Update setting, latest was 10130.  I don't think the more recent builds are available as isos.

But if Michael is correct, then throw everything I just said out the window.  Or he is able to download the most recent/unstable developer builds, which I cannot.

Since I have larger fonts set, the UI is pretty bad, with text overrunning many fields.  I will have to adjust that.

Hi Jud, can you show me a picture of that ?

Yes, will do later.

Wondering whether the custom filter is mainly for people with NOS1/1a and Orelos....

Quote from: PeterSt
No, why ? But it would be best for NOS DACs because all is super "fragile" (tuning is very precise and the slightest interference will kill what I put in there (about the phase stuff and such)).

Was thinking it might help with, e.g., DSP for bass or something.  Both the DACs I have are delta-sigma, so no PCM upsampling but the result would be run through a modulator.  I imagine that qualifies as "the slightest interference."  Wink
