Hi,

Actually it is time to start downloading Vista/SP1 and all, so I'll take 64 bit with it.
So far I never had the time, and it never had priority.
No guarantees, because so far nobody knows actually *why* it won't run. It just should but doesn't.

thanx, will try it on XP first because that's working. Have to take the time to be able to hear the differences.

Hi Peter,

I just moved into 64 bit OS (getting up to speed on Hyper-V, virtualization and all the stuff that goes with it).

Now I am stuck with Foobar (which actually sounds pretty good in Windows 2008 Server 64bit) because XXHighEnd is not working in 64bit OS.
The virtual machines can't talk to audio hardware on the host, the host has to be 64 bit version of Windows 2008 Server.

In the move to 64 bit world I had one custom app that would not run. To run it in 64 bit OS I had to recompile with a setting set in the Visual Studio 2008 project's build setting:
"Target 32bit OS"

Have you tried that setting before building XXHighEnd?

Here is the error message I see when I try to run XXHigheEnd in 64bit OS:
Description:
  Stopped working

Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:   CLR20r3
  Problem Signature 01:   xxhighend.exe
  Problem Signature 02:   1.0.3034.29559
  Problem Signature 03:   480fb0e2
  Problem Signature 04:   XXHighEnd
  Problem Signature 05:   1.0.3034.29559
  Problem Signature 06:   480fb0e2
  Problem Signature 07:   d
  Problem Signature 08:   d0
  Problem Signature 09:   System.InvalidOperationException
  OS Version:   6.0.6001.2.1.0.274.10
  Locale ID:   1033

When you have time and so on... send me a temp version with extra debugging output and we can work out what the problem is.
Who knows it may sound even better running in 64 bit version of windows.

Cheers,
Brent

Hi Brent,

According to the debug (output) version, sadly that won't work (otherwise it would have been running 1 year ago). There isn't even one line of code executed.

IIRC your compile option has been tried, BUT that was in VS2005 and the options are called x64 vs. x86.
And it can very well be that VS2008 makes a difference. I have the CD's laying around for months now; must try that.

In any case I'll think of you Brent. Thanks very much.

Hi Peter,

You can install VS2008 and VS2005 side-by-side without one messing up the other. The Express (free) versions have 90% of everything in the Visual Studio version.

I think the problem is in the front-end. If I directly launch xxengine3.exe I don't see an error.
If you take a copy of the XXHighEnd project and start chucking stuff out until you get one that will run in 64bit OS, then you know what is causing the problem. Divide and conquer.

Sorry for telling you how to do your craft. I know you know how to code better then I.

Just giving you a 64bit nudge Happy

Cheers,
Brent

Hehe, but of course. But that requires Vista/64 ... which I up till now avoided ... Happy

Ok, or I recalled wrongly, or it wasn't tried properly, or whatever else, but the x86 option just works here. BUT :

Because I started to compile on the x64 machine, I had to install some other software as well, and now I don't know whether it runs without that software (and this is many bits and pieces although I only installed one, so I can't de-install (don't know what)).

Most probably later today I will put up a test version, so you can try it. yes

Brent, anyone with Vista/64 ...

Please secure your XXHighEnd.exe from your 0.9u-16 (!!) folder, and unzip below XXHighEnd.zip to that folder.
Do not download the dxwebsetup shown !!

If all is right, this just works.
If it does not -and only then- please download the dxwebsetup and run it. This will install DirectX functionality which anyway was not present in my Vista/64 Enterprise version.
It needs an Internet connection since it will download some more stuff.

Please let me know whether it worked for you, and how.
Peter

Edit : Since I got the dxwebsetup indirectly via a link, I can't be 100% sure that this is the page where it originally came from : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en
but most probably it is. It is my advise to read the contents of that page, before you run the dxwebsetup from below zip.
Also, most probably what's behind the dxwebsetup.zip is for english Vista versions only.
Please take good notice of what you did to get things running, in order to let me know and spread the word.

* XXHighEnd.zip (197.63 KB - downloaded 397 times.)
* dxwebsetup.exe (298.51 KB - downloaded 392 times.)

It works!!

Albeit I only tried it in demo mode. (I tried this on my work PC with Realtek onboard sound)

Good work Peter.

Since Vista 32 is limited to 3GB of RAM and with the ever increasing availability of hi-res downloads (24/96 & 24/176) I suspect one day we are going to need 4GB (or more) of RAM and so Vista 64 will be the way to go.

Thank you very much both !
Credits go to Brent though, because apparently it was just the "target X86" (where's the logic ??) that did the job. could have applied that 12 months ago blush1

It's working very well, no problems so far. I get less latency (measured with DPC) and better sound with vista64.
Well done

Hi Peter,

Thank you for 64 bit support. I didn't notice your reply till today.

I have only tried version .9-v1. I didn't have to download any direct X drivers. By the way... DXDiag.exe tells me I have Direct X version 10 installed (it must come with Windows2008, same as Vista, I am guessing since I don't use Vista).

When I start this version of XX a debug prompt "Windows2008 Error" appears but doesn't stop it from working.

I compared Foobar2000 to XXHighEnd in 64 bit Windows 2008 Ent. and XXHighEnd is the clear winner.
I can't yet say XX sounds better in the 64 bit or 32 bit Windows 2008. That will take time and many reboots (which we all like to avoid).

Cheers,
Brent
