(antwoord in Engels mag :-) .
Alvast bedankt

Hi there Dirk,

When you receive the message that the device was initiated (or whatever that message exactly is) but that you must check the sample rate etc., there is too much for me to guess to give an advise on what to do. The only thing I can tell is that I too have been puzzling for 20 minutes occasionally to find out what I myself did wrong. So, things are not obvious here.

Without knowing what your settings are and attempt (of changing them) were, start out as basically as possible. So, set the fx slider to 1x so ouput sample rate will be the same as input sample rate. Have a normal CD (ripped of course) which is 16/44.1 and now output sample rate will show 44100, the same as the input sample rate. Never change this (fx) setting, until you have something going. Now :

There are a couple of things that can be wrong, or wrongly working out :

- Generally, set Q1 to 14.
- The Output Device. Try both KS: prefixed devices (for Kernel Streaming) and non-KS: prefixed (for WASAPI).
- When a KS: device is chosen, set the Device Buffer Size to 1024 or otherwise to the buffer size of the Interface/DAC if you know it. Choose KS Adaptive Mode and set Q1 to 1 in this case (KS Adaptive Mode).
- Set your DAC Is to what it is capable of. If this is 24/192 according the manual, set it to that (etc.).
- Set DAC Needs to 32.

When the above still brings you the same message, set DAC Needs to 24 and try again. Don't do this without preamp or other volume attenuating means. So, try this at low volume.

I'm sure that fiddling with the above will let it work at some stage, or will bring varying error messages otherwise. When the latter, tell me what message occurred in which situation, and not a "about such and so" and certainly not translated into dutch. So, try to be precise.

And oh, may it help : the input can be 24/96 max for Toslink and USB; not 24/192 (coax/RCA will do that latter).

Hy Peter,
I'll give it a try in English. So far nothing is working when I changed settings.  That's why I give 3 shots of picture of my settings. The showed error message is always the same and it appears in about 4-5 seconds.
Changing engine setting is difficult and unlogical, because the DAC already comes with the KS setting.

ANd you can see the DAC brings withit that he is 24/96 . So are the other tips ?

Gr. Dirk

Ok Dirk, your English is fine and better then mine. But may it take you too long to do it in English, let's just have it in Dutch.

Right. What's next ?
Do you have a 24/96 file laying around ? if so, just try it with these settings.
When you don't have such a file just tell so, then I have another option, but it is somewhat more "tedious". Ok ?

Oh, those screenshots are great.

Peter

PS: I assume you also tried the DAC Needs = 24, right ?

Hallo Peter,

Dirk

Hey Dirk, so it seems you are on the right track.

Now, a first thing which is good to know, is that when you are attempting these kind of things of which we both don't know whether it is good or wrong, is that you must be able to "reset" things conveniently, so each new attempt is not influenced by the previous one. How to do that ?

Assuming you know how to get to the "Q Panel" (where Q1 etc. is), there is this Off button. Click this after each attempt of which you can see it failed. This removes the sound engine from memory, and all will start fresh with the next attempt.
Btw, have the Split File Size (SFS) at a low value like 80.

Next thing to remember is that you always should nicely wait for something to happen. I mean, some kind of message, or otherwise until music plays. So, do not start to click around when nothing happens immediately, unless it is the Stop button and even that should not be used within 1 second of Play. Oh, you can click around much more in the end, but only when things are going well and when you have more of a feeling about what you can do wrong (right now it will look like you do everthing wrongly, but that's because we don't know what is going on really).

Another good advise is to always quit XXHighEnd when things go wrong this way, and restart it (you can use Alt-X for starting is easily). This too may reset things from left-overs of wrongish things.

When you don't quit XXHighEnd, at least always use Stop before whatever you want to do next.

The above brings nothing new compared to yesterday, BUT it should help you avoid it not working anymore because of starting out with a wrong "setting" earlier, that causing troubled for the next attempt which might have worked without the earlier troubles. So, this is your motto and good to remember.

The only thing I can add for now is that the message "Engine#4 did not start in time) has two main reaons :
1. Something went wrong with the preparation of the audio file without the audio engine recognizing what exactly (this is not likely in your case);
2. The status of things are out of order, which easily can happen because of an earlier "error".

#2 is what this whole post is about.

Last thing : The fact that the time cursor is running says nothing ! The fac that the message "Engine#4 did not start in time" appears tells for 100% sure that no sound CAN have appeared. I can add to this that to my knowledge no settings exist where all seems right (no message appearing anywhere) while no sound comes from it. So, or you have sound, or you have a message (but it can appear somewhat late(r).

Don't forget to put the Digital Volume at -0 !
(and keep on using the pre-amp and/or analogue attenuation during this stage of trying !!)

Peter

PS: Do you have a 24/96 file or not ?

To speed up things for you a little, and only when the before larger post doesn't help you, do this :

Set the fx slider to 2x and activate the Arc Prediction button and try again. Notice that the output sample rate must show 88200 now.

When it still doesn't work, now activate the Anti Image button (Arc Prediction will go off) and :
Go to the Settings Area and in the DAC Settings section activate 96/192 only.
Do not forget that you set this, because it will largely limit further possibilities and you may not understand later why things can't be engaged which could be engaged earlier. So, when this still does not help, deactivate it again.
Leave the fx at 2x for this attempt.
The output sample rate must show 96000 now.
Depending on the speed of your PC, in this mode take maybe 10 seconds extra into account before playback starts.

Don't forget : only try the things from this post, when you exsessively tried the things from the earlier posts.

Keep it up !

Hello Peter,

Thanks for all your support, but now I'm busy for a few days, so I have no news.
But I have 2 questions:
- what means ( in Dutch):(and keep on using the pre-amp and/or analogue attenuation during this stage of trying !!)
- please send me the 24/96 file to be absolutely sure. You have my email I suppose.

The slider was not in upper right but in upper left (stupid me )
