Something very weird just happened. I've been listening to Diary of Dreams album when suddenly the sound disappeared. OK, I start XXHE again, push stop and play again - nothing. Looking for process in task manager, nothing strange. I change the sample rate, try to play a test tone in playback devices properties - dead silence. Quick restart, hit play in XXHE and get horrible distrortions followed by To many buffer errors window. WTF? Nothing has changed, I didn't change anything nor install a thing. It's on the same track that played very well before. Special modes confirms that sth is going on. I had to increase the buffer size to 2048, both for Adaptive and Special mode to get rid of distortions, but it doesn't play that well now. My question is: what happened during that faulty playback that caused all of this?
Actually ... I recall you had something like that before. Or am I wrong ? Not exactly, I lost "the rabbit" after I've done "don't know what or system has done it for me". I think it's much easier to have a dedicated pc just for xxhe - no network, no 3rd party apps, no additional drivers.

And after a format I still can't achieve 1024 samples :D Than what kind of combination of settings or maybe specific order of running them (!) enabled my Cantatis to run at 1024 samples? I have no idea. I got it and now it's lost.
Everyone is running W7? Can anyone tell my how are things on Vista or XP?
Greets, Marcin
Hi Marcin, what a stupid situation you have there. The only thing I can imagine is that the (internally set ! by the OS) buffer size of your soundcard changed without notice. So, if you'd repeat the procedure to find its buffer size, do you come to the same as before ? But actually I don't have other answers than : the most strange. Peter Yes, that's strange and I'm sure we can't control everything, at least not in Windows :D

For those having troubles playing with low buffer settings, try higher Q1 values. Endless path of combinations... Peter, what's your statement about recommended settings - keep Q1 at 1 with lowest possible buffer, even if it means 2048 samples or try higher Q1 values with low buffer settings? For me it's either Q1=1 and 2048 samples or Q1=7 at 256 samples? What's the difference in theory?
Looking forward to your reply, Marcin

Call me crazy, but I think that specific order of playback settings matters (besides psychological side). Peter, is this remotely possible from a software/system side? Let's say that during one system runtime I'm trying 10 different settings in XXHE (for adaptive and special mode). Can you tell that each setting is totally independent?

No real idea here, except from your PC maybe being busy with something. A driver fault seems more likely though. Try a reboot, and don't forget to set back the buffer size ...
Sth must have changed, because I can't listen to that awful sound that's coming out of speakers... Removed drivers, restarted, reinstalled drivers - same thing. Loaded last known system configuration - the same. I' gonna reinstall the system again, damn. At least that's not taking so long, but Peter has to send me new activation code all over again. I wonder, how much time he's going to spend on that once there will a lot more "customers'...

Another remark from my side. Adaptive always sounds good and coherent, no matter what kind of music we're listening to. This is not the case when it comes to special mode. Yes, there are tracks where you think it sounds better, but it's just an illusion Just set a playlist with tracks of different genres and you will know what I'm saying. Special adds warmth and colour, but it's not a good thing in general (IMHO). I updated my signature and it's stays this way for a while.

OK, after a series of comparisons, here are some thoughs regarding different modes:
Special: - richer midrange and that is why I liked it when I first hit the play button - better bass punch - gentle top end - overall I get the feeling of easy listening
Adaptive: - more details, especially at high frequencies - bass could be better - overall feeling - natural
Each has its advantages and disadvantages and it depends on album which I'm listening at the moment, but for me and my current setup Special is better at the moment.
