Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: My first Windows 8 experience

Yesterday I checked the latency of my PC with DPC latency checker ( http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml). I noticed a strange peak repeating at intervals, but could not identify what was causing it. I deactivated a lot of thing in the Device Manager but it did not change a thing. I have to confess that I am actually using a wired network for the moment, but I was not convinced it was caused by this. Then, going again at the Thesycon website, I read this notice: (quote from Thesycon website) " Windows 8 Compatibility: The DPC latency utility runs on Windows 8 but does not show correct values. The output suggests that the Windows 8 kernel performs badly and introduces a constant latency of one millisecond which is not the case in practice. DPCs in the Windows 8 kernel behave identical to Windows 7. The utility produces incorrect results because the implementation of kernel timers has changed in Windows 8 which causes a side effect with the measuring algorithm used by the utility. Thesycon is working on a new version of the DPC latency utility and will make it available on this site as soon as it is finished. "
Just in case someone sees the same and wonder what is going on... Alain

Brian, yes you are right. But FYI : I tried to have both in there (W7 and W8 settings) and that doesn't fit. I think I can extend the space for it, but everybody's post will be a meter long because of that alone.
For obvious reasons we also shouldn't remove our W7 references.
Anyway, thinking about it !
Thanks, Peter
Maybe a thread where everyone could indicate its configuration, with the possibility of changing it "on the fly" with a flag indicating the change ? It would also have the advantage of reducing the size of each post... If it is possible of course... Alain

Finally, I checked on the net for this "frog" and "French" thing. I seems that it is not related directly at Canadian French people, but to French (from France) first, and then extended here... All this is because our French cousins like to eat frog legs... I tried that many years ago and with spices and garlic, I must admit that it really tastes good ! But if one thinks he will jump higher and further after, well... Think again Wow... I can't imagine the compliments a guy would receive if he eats horse... Hum "You look like an stallion..." ??? But I would not say that I like to eat lobster, nobody would want to shake hand with me... Alain

I have a desktop with W7 as a "general purpose" PC, then the dedicated music PC with W8. What I did at first was to install the 2 PCs with the download that Peter provided me for W8, but finally I reinstalled the previous on the general purpose PC, since I was receiving errors... Like it was indicating that the other PC was not there (but it was still working)...

By the way, the reason why the "titles" of the option are not precise on my part is due to the fact that I have a French version of W8... I should have thought about this...

Hi Paul, I had a problem too at first, but I finally realized that I forgot to "authorize" connection to my music PC, since I just installed a new OS... Control Panel > System > Advanced System Parameters > Remote Desktop Connection... Then click on "Authorize..." or something like that on the music PC. I hope it helps Alain

Hey Alain - you are mean. You sent a PM and I can't delete PMs. Ok, I can, but what's the use.
Ok, solved the problem but didn't listen to it. All was a matter of forgetting one small = somewhere. Yep, that's how it works in C.
Might you want to try it (and don't you dare to do not - actually you should be playing 48KHz files for the rest of your life from now on ... okay, kidding), paste the below (XXEngine3.exe) over your current 0.9z-8-1a folder (or other 0.9z-8 folder, but not nothing else !!).
And hey, thanks for being persistent ! Peter
I came back home, downloaded the file and... (drums rolling)... Tada ! It works ! I does !!!! Now I am sad... What to find next, except good music with SSQ (Super SQ)... Regards, AHA - A Happy Alain

Peter, Well I at least can try to "un" confuse 2 things. 1. This thread is about ONE song that, played alone, does have a -10% pitch variation when I upsample it at x4, as opposed to x2 or nothing. This problem has been consistently here since 9z-5-2, that happened to be the first time I discovered this. Though I admit that I did not test this song with each and every version that followed, but each time I did, the same was happening. That is why I followed your suggestion to try to redo each version up to the actual. I did, but with WASAPI. I will do it with KS this evening. 2. There was also a situation where 2 songs, each with a different format (song 1 = 16/44.1, song 2 = 24/96) were behaving strangely (this is the one I have to check when I will be back home this evening). But I don't recall creating a thread about this. Maybe I did that through PM About problem 1: I did this test with JRiver (it did not create any problem with upsampling). I will do also with foobar as requested. Alain PS: You know like I know that these are the kind of situations where it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. My life does not depend on this (I learned that last summer). Ok ?
