I tried an optical usb extender with a battery supply when I was using the usb of my dac... It was noticeably worse than the generic 6 foot cable I had. USB, at least for my dac, was noticeably worse than spdif, which I now use. I don't recommend usb anymore,,, don't know about the latest "asynchronous" that wavelength uses,,, maybe ok?

I have to go to bed. But, after a few sips of whiskey, I'm not sure now and need more time. I moved the Q1 to 4 and changed the scheme to 3 and that seemed to help quite a bit. I also turned down my volume a bit... I know that's supposed to not be a good sign, but I only turned down my the upper volumes on the xover to get a better balance. Still preliminary, but W3 seems very lively in the upper mids, something that going to Q1 14 may help quite a bit and end up being better... dunno yet. Need more time which I don't have tonight. Changing the scheme also helped... scheme 4 moves thing forward which I liked with v7, but was too much at Q1 0 for W3, so scheme 3 worked better...
I may still like V7 better, but I need more time now. There was a liveliness, even more clear (dang is that possible... too clear? stripped?) to W3,...I need some more time with it Peter... and ya, with the new versions, the Q1 and scheme settings are very obvious in changing the character of the player. Gotta go to bed, but hold them horses, unless you want to work on stuff ,,, dunno
Last thoughts were that W3 the upper mids were jumping out a bit, but sounded better when I turned down the high vol on the xover... may sound best after a bit more tweaking? dunno yet Peter. I'll listen tomorrow and will have more time come tues evening too.

Oh Dave, I forgot to mention it (once more). My Q1 needs to be at 14 or something like that ...
But nah, I will change the suff back to how it was (but again, it is difficult).
Anyway, LydMekk is out of the way. Bwahahaha.
Thanks a lot Dave. Peter

ok, but i don't think you'll like what i have to say....
I finally loaded up w3 (had some grr problems of it only starting in demo mode after writing over my sentimental ver D ... so deleted and wrote it over V7...no demo mode problems... what's with that... anyway,,, also can't start ver D .. just for fun tried, but can't what's with taht... i digress....)
All settings the same as V7 (using Q1 0 and scheme 4 lately, volume at 0) and kept it at 700 and untick start eng 3.... right away and I mean right away, it sounded like Poopoo. kinda hurt even and soundstage was off, like phase wrong. I shut it off.... went over and checked the size of the Pinback - Autumn of the Seraphs album (rock I'm familiar with and buried vocals which help me judge) for it's size... less than 500 mb... so I change the 700 to 500... that's a little better... went back to 700, hmm seems better than before, but I'll stick to the 500... played a bit more, still kinda poopooish... Went back to V7, and I like it like that. Went back and forth with 3 albums, and rebooting a couple times to make sure things weren't "sticking". Sorry.. very preliminary and I really should test more tomorrow and possibly change settings Q1? scheme? to see if I can make w3 fit... I've only listened to 3 different albums 3 different songs to get this impression. W3 seems more glarey, soundstage not as locked in, thinner not as robust... wanted to turn it down, compared to v7. Kinda late, I'm not very relaxed, and maybe need some more time with it. K? But, first blush was not good,,,, like I said 500 seems better and should give that more of a listen, but right off the bat at 700 first few notes did not leave a favorable impression.

Sorry Peter, I've still got v7. With my wav/cue file averaging 500 mb, is there an advantage to me trying W? I've been just messing around here today and haven't started really listening, just background. Is there a reason I should try W with my single files? or should I try some split albums and that's where I might hear a difference... will I have to then change settings back and forth?
these are the tweaks you speak of? " Set split file at size (MB) at 700 (minimum); - UNtick Start Engine3 during conversion;"

I forget where all the threads are. But I think if you just keep shutting it off and restarting XXHE, it eventually works it way out. or If you follow this guide made by Peter in shutting stuff down you'll find the one that stops this ChangeWP thing... I'd have to read through to remember and find it, so I'll leave that to you Put your frontend system in your signiture helps everyone help you and, are you running V7 or the W series of XXHE? http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=548.msg3933#msg3933

hiyall For fun (??what the heck does sev think is fun??) I read through this thread. The whole time I was reading I kept shouting out. "Go buy a clean copy of Windows Vista (100 US here), format your HDD and reinstall Vista". ... well then also follow Peter's guide to tweak/shut off services; course I'm not sure the guide was around back then, but,,, I mean really, I've never entered a PW on install of windows, always shut off UAC, defender, firewall (always put yourself behind a hardware firewall, not software), disable as many services as you can think of....I think this might have solved your issues much earlier. Laptop manufacturers are infamous for slipping in cr*p (antivirus stuff which is just as bad as malware) on their Windows install; better to get your own Vista OEM/builders copy.
For 44.1 I run at 48 samples on the FF800 always...I shut off mixer and settings when not using too. Last night I turned on settings to run 128 samples to listen to 24/96 stuff.
On this new machine I built, I never go above 63 us and shows a constant 59 us with DPC latency checker...some of those idiots using cplay with xp claim ~5 us ... hmmm not sure what I could do to get down there with Vista, but I've never experienced a glitch. Edit: Just for fun I ran DPC on my xp machine which is fairly loaded with cr*p, (semi optimised when first built and Superantispyware [a good one to use occationally] cleans it) and it runs around 25 us with no programs running.... go figure.
So glad this long process seems over for you; but I'd still recommend doing a clean install of Vista if dell has any of their stuff running on there, or shutting off extraneous programs. ps. At this point you probably don't even want to touch/change anything in your computer heh... it works YEA!

hmm So, good I have sp1 Vista? But I thought you're concerned about SP1. I don't know, but it's been good for me, or I don't know what sp0 would have been like compared. Will you be able to slipstream sp1 update with your Vista sp0 when you reinstall... I'd think you'd have to or you'll just end up with vista sp0 and errors and then try to upgrade to sp1.

I must be feeling rather adventurous after this long period of just wanting to listen after building my latest rig. I first just went with what Peter had for core appt. scheme (3) and then what Andy was using (1) ... but, after seeing LydMekk liking nothing I decided I'd start trying all the different schemes. I've started trying different processor appointment schemes with each album I play. I hope to come back with some info later... but, I thought I'd throw this out; instead of thinking one scheme does it right for your particular computer/music system... start seeing if you can find a pattern of likes/dislikes of schemes matched to particular recordings. Tonight, I tried 4 different schemes with a recording I know well (radiohead - inrainbows) and for the first time tried scheme 4 and found it fit best for that recording. Like I said, just starting this and maybe I'll like scheme 4 for everything, but prolly not is what I'm thinking... most likely choosing a scheme based on music/how it was recorded and/or preference of how I want it presented that evening...I don't have much to say yet, but scheme 1 - seems to move soundstage forward and create a solid image scheme 3 - seems more laid back ... anyway, instead of finding the perfect scheme for your system, see if you can find the perfect scheme for your mood and the recording. thought I'd throw that out there.

read calibrator's post above...I have no changewp problems and I am using V7. In fact, I have not seen any problems at all.
I have a copy of my first activated XXHE V-d that I make another copy of on the SSD/C: ; change the name to latest version (ie. XXHighEndV-07); copy the zip of the newest version into that and overwrite; pull the .exe to desktop making a shortcut; right click to tell it to run as administrator; pull a copy of the shortcut to my toolbar too. Hope things work out Russ.

My Vista prem. 64 bit comes as SP1 .... sigh :/ anyway I always choose "No, I don't want to Restore the Old Settings" anyway; it's no big deal for me to set settings again and I guess I never trust auto stuff...cantankerous aren't I. Now let me finish reading your post. Related to above, you can guess that I did a completely new install of windows when trying the HDD vs SSD comparison instead of trying to use a program to copy windows from SSD to HDD.

The below can be reached by Manage like in the before post. I think you can recognize by means of the icons where to go.
With the first one (14c) I could not prove that it really helped, but the intention with this one is to make the system at rest earlier after a boot. My Vista for sure is, but I don't know whether this one cause it. Please note that this kind of "weak" one, actually had to be a full stop of Event Logging, but I don't think it can be done. This is about the one above this one (look at the right) which is similar but for normal operation. The one here (14c) is only for during startup.
14d u/i 14f speak for themselves.
I was not able to stop the Dialog log... it gives me an error "Access denied" when I tried (on both the SSD and HDD). Also, after a reboot, these other two logs start up again, right? Do you shut them down each time? I'm going to go look again this morning.
