Ya, I've had to reset cards before even though they looked in.  Always a good place to check first, maybe you have.

To that end, I'm thinking about a usb to coax unit like http://www.empiricalaudio.com/ USB Offramp Turbo Two ("...The USB Off-Ramp Turbo 2 is a true audiophile USB to S/PDIF converter. This converter will pass most audio formats, including MP3, .wav @16/44.1, .wav@24/88.2, .wav @ 24/96 and iTunes. AC3 is also possible by requesting the M-Audio driver

Dave, I've thought about picking one of these up myself. But I would advise you to be careful, and/or at least be sure you have a trial period or there is a return policy - because Steve (Empirical Audio) has licensed the same firmware from Centrance that Benchmark is using. (Unless you ask him for the M-Audio driver, which some people say is cr*p) Keep your eye on the Benchmark thread to see if the issue is resolved as far as being able to use exclusive mode with XXHighEnd:

Oh, thanks.  This is new and useful info for me.
408  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Crack Detection ? on: March 23, 2008, 10:24:02 pm
Yeah, I was thinking about that myself. Answer : No.
Question : Does it trip when you check that Mem box ? If not then I'm doing something superfluous ...

But I'll check with that album we share (later).
Using 9-u7 "Cornershop" trips crack detection with either Mem box checked or unchecked.  If I play this album using 9-u7 by bypassing/checking-box crack detect then album plays 1st track fine, but then cracks are heard in 2nd track and beyond.  Using 9-u6 "Cornershop" album plays fine in its entirety with no cracks.

These distortions were not there on 9-u6

In fact, this is the most interesting. I think I have that Cornershop album, although I can't be sure it is the same pressing (version).

Is there a danger of it making cracks on older versions?

I don't think so Dave. All is about the "processing" needed to use the Digital Volume and exploiting the larger bit depth (which you can't unhappy).

Btw, I just looked ... is at least your picture of "When I was born" the same ?

Yes, that's it.

I'm not using the volume (set at 0), but I guess it still needs to check for cracks? or processing still gets done?

Right now, through usb my dac can only accept 16/44.1:

As nice as it would be to find a usb/firewire solution for all these rates (or even 384 hehe), I think I may be able to squeeze 24/96 from the Stello if I use it's coax input. AC3 is also possible by requesting the M-Audio driver..."),
or should I just get the Fireface 800 (I wonder if they'll upgrade existing firefaces to work with higher rez?), or ...

I would like to use the digital volume on XXHE, my Pass xover preamp XRV1 & Moscode amp just doesn't give me enough control of the volume (too loud, so very narrow volume range).  Would I be able to use the volume of XXHE without losing any bits on my 16/44.1 cue/wav files if the stello can see 24/96 ?

From PeterSt
"There is one other exception currently not triggering the new code : Cue Files; Because at this moment a Cue File album is processed in full (hence not per track), it will not fit in the so far advised amount of memory (2GB). See the next topic as well.
Note that when the DAC can't exploit more than 16 bits, this doesn't matter anyway (special message to SeVeReD )."

Does this mean that if I do get the stello to 24/96 that I won't be able to use the new code algorithm because my cue/wav files are too big?  Need more memory/computer? or just won't ever do it.  Are my 16/44.1 wav/cue files using the new code without volume, as I'm doing now?
411  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Crack Detection ? on: March 23, 2008, 07:50:47 pm
I've found two albums/wav&cue that seem to be affected by this.  Dac is 16/44.1 - No digital volume.
One rip, "Cornershop - When I Was Born For the Seventh Time" plays on 9-u6 fine all the way through.  But on 9-u7 it plays for the first song and then stops and pops player up.  If I then try to play 2nd song (unattended) it plays but with light crackles in the background.  When I played this same wav/cue in Attended mode, it stops after first song playing fine, then pops up a 16 Bit Crack Detect = 13750.  But as mentioned, plays great in 9-u6.
Another rip, "Zero 7 - Remixes" pops a crack warning up for both 9-u6 & 9-u7.  Since I just reformatted I only have these two players and my original, 9-d.  I played "Zero 7 - Remixes" in 9-d and it sounded great; no cracks at all.  I got brave and tried this album without crack protection on 9-u7 and it sound great again; no cracks could be heard.  But I'm a little bit wary to subvert the Crack Detection stuff.
Sssooooo....
Is it ok to go back to old versions of XXHE to play an album that doesn't pass Crack Test on 9-u7 ?  Is there a danger of it making cracks on older versions? or is that just something that's popped up in these recent versions.  The only time I've heard "cracks"/distortion is on that Cornershop album and it wasn't very loud cracks, just crackles following along with the music.  These distortions were not there on 9-u6.

I ran that program posted here...   http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=349.0   ... Right before sp1 and just did remember now to do it again.  Before SP1 I was getting an occasional red spike and more frequent orange.  Now!  I get low greens and an occasionally orange.  SP1 Vista ... yea?!
413  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: Vista SP1 available on: March 19, 2008, 12:38:22 am
sp1 working here, not really tested.  9-u6 making music while I walk around the house.  Will get in room soon.
414  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: Vista SP1 available on: March 18, 2008, 08:24:10 pm
I'm going for it.  I don't have anything but XXHE on the laptop.  If I have to, I'll reinstall Vista if it doesn't work well.

I don't understand. what should I try?

Turn computer sounds on and see if you can make it "beep" while XXHE is playing?  i think
416  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Model 0.9u-4 & Vista... Does Engine 3 work with USB Benchmark Dac 1? on: March 16, 2008, 02:37:27 am

I think (!!) I read somewhere the other day that they applied a synchronous application, which is not the most usual. I won't say that by this means they avoided a difficult signed driver route (if that would go through at all), but anyway it doesn't work under Vista WASAPI Exclusive Mode, which IMHO is logic.

Peter did you mean a (one) synchronous or asynchronous application...?

Any other USB device you have going on?

At the moment playing with a very cheap C-media chipset card (€18) with special open source WDM drivers (http://code.google.com/p/cmediadrivers/)
Sounds very good.

Should a more expensive souncard improve SQ in this route?

I'd say yes... especially if you're getting cracks/pops and XXHE isn't even playing music.

this is not according to tests done by me or pedal.

I am very sorry, and have been confused; the CD10 obviously is the same as the Eximus. So what I read was from that other device, including amp. blush1

I think our units can accept 24/96 through coax though,,, right?

Hi,

The DAC setting is 16/44, and this is the only value I able to set wihout getting an errormessage.
Trying to set e.g. 24/96 afterwards, XX acccepted, but playing the WAV file resulted is message 'INVALIDARG'.

The test DAC setting gave me the same as seen before on this forum for Eximus and Stello USB.
I played the VAW 24/96 file.

Wait... let me understand this.  You have the DAC setting in XXHE at 16/44.1, but are playing and hearing 24/96 WAV files?  I've never actually tried to play a 24/96 wav file.... hmm time to go to the linn site and grab one and see...if only I had a working amp heh... tomorrow if I find time, I'll dl a file and see if it plays in XXHE.  But that doesn't sound like it should work?  Is some down/resampling taking place?
